Russia has been stripped of soccer's biggest annual match, the Champions League final, after Ukraine invasion

UEFA will no longer host this season's Champions League final in St. Petersburg after Russia invaded Ukraine, a source told the Associated Press. European soccer's showpiece event was set to be held at the Gazprom Arena in Russia's second city on May 28. It is unclear where the match will be moved to, but UEFA on Friday is expected to confirm the decision to take the match out of Russia after an extraordinary meeting of the UEFA executive committee was called. "Following the evolution of the situation between Russia and Ukraine in the last 24 hours, the UEFA president has decided to call an extraordinary meeting of the Executive Committee for Friday 25 February at 10:00 CET in order to evaluate the situation and take all necessary decisions," UEFA said in a statement. "Further communication will be made after the meeting of the UEFA Executive Committee."

Al sporting events hosted in Russia should be boycotted indefinitely.

They also lost the 2022 Formula1 Grand Prix in Sochi. I bet Putin had his own private box too.

Given how notorious sport-o-crats are for looking the other way....I think Vlad is a bit shocked by this. I understand some of the leagues are just having open dates on their schedules instead of taking the money that a fixture would deliver. Good on them.

Yeah, that's the thing. In 2 years or 4 years it will likely just be one of those "forgive and forget" postures where no real harm will come to Russia for this. It would be great if the sports community could actually sack-up and just bar Russia from competing and just ignore their bid to host anything going forward until there is actual regime change. Of course....in the eyes of some of the world (not mine), the US did a lot of the same thing in Iraq in 2003. The US did get a UN resolution but, as it turns out, it was based on testimony from then-secretary Colin Powell that turned out to be dubious if not outright false.

Part of the problem is the widespread corruption of the IOC and FIFA. Tyrants pay them a lot of money under the table.
