Russia Gas Pipeline to Boost Grip on Ukraine and Europe, U.S. Diplomat Says

The reason for the cut off is stated in the articles - namely Ukraine siphoning off gas.

Just as you don't see a brurglar in your dacha and run out to the shops to buy goods to replace the ones he's putting in his van so that he can take even more.

Poland Waves Goodbye to Russian Gas After 74 Years

Russia’s oldest natural gas buyer is ready to break up after more than 74 years. Poland, which relies on Kremlin-controlled Gazprom PJSC for about two-thirds of its gas, says diversification trumps potential price cuts it could leverage from building an import link to access Norwegian fuel. That comes after the eastern European nation in 2016 completed a liquefied natural gas terminal to diversify away from the Russian gas it’s been buying since 1944. “We’re not diversifying our supplies in order to continue with Russia,” Piotr Naimski, the government official in charge of strategic energy infrastructure, said in an interview in Warsaw. “It’s a question of security and the Baltic Pipe is not a part of negotiations with Gazprom.” The ruling Law & Justice party has said since it came to power in 2015 that it won’t renew a long-term contract with Gazprom that ends in 2022. In order to do that, state-controlled gas distributor PGNiG SA had to revive a project for a link to Norway first mooted about 20 years ago. The Baltic Pipe is on schedule, which is tight with a completion date of October 2022.

PGNiG gets 10 billion cubic meters a year under the Gazprom contract. It doubled its LNG purchases from Qatar as of this year to about 3 billion cubic meters and signed a mid-term deal for U.S. deliveries. The LNG terminal’s capacity is set to rise 50 percent to 7.5 billion cubic meters a year after 2020. At the same time, the Polish company committed to transit 8.78 billion cubic meters a year via the Baltic Pipe when it starts. Additionally, the country produces more than 4 billion cubic meters of its own gas a year and in order to export an excess it may have post-2022 it’s building links with neighboring countries including Slovakia, Lithuania, the Czech Republic and Ukraine. “The connection with Slovakia is key as it gives us access, via Hungary, to other countries,” Naimski said. “We will be able to supply up to 5 billion cubic meters to that region and for some countries it’s their annual use.”

After 2022, Poland will receive 43% of its gas from Norway (Baltic Pipe), 37% from the US (LNG ships), and 20% from internal fields. Russia is nowhere in the mix.

There are indeed viable alternatives to Russian energy dependence.

Of course there are alternatives if you want to fritter away taxpayer's money into the pockets of US corporates by buying US LNG at a comfortable mark up to the price of Russian gas.

Russian gas is cheaper at the onset, until the full geopolitical bill becomes due. Hand Putin this dual-use ax and he'll certainly use it to chop recalcitrant nations off at the knees.

The European Parliament is set to veto Nordstream 2.

European Parliament calls for the Nord Stream 2 construction to be cancelled

Danish Foreign Minister Anders Samuelsen says that Moscow's attack on Ukrainian boats at sea is the last straw. He says Denmark will probably deny the NordStream 2 undersea permit.

Samuelsen: Det er svært at argumentere for russisk gasledning i dansk farvand
We shall see... The pipeline does not have to through Danish water, it is just easier.

Never stated it did. Just updating the news regarding NordStream 2.

Nord Stream-2 is intended by the Kremlin to put greater Europe in exactly the energy-vulnerable position Ukraine is in now and has been in for decades.

Merkel protege suggests reducing gas flow through Nord Stream 2 pipeline

Ukraine is energy vulnerable by their own making, they kept stealing gas and refusing to pay their bills, and have put too little effort into their own energy sector, in which ukraine has plenty of oil, but their industry is poorly developed leaving them reliant on imports. Ukraine is also still stuck on the post soviet discounts, where russia supplied oil to former soviet nations at discounts, sometimes next to nothing due to their poverty, while selling oil to the eu at full price, as time went on oil prices went up the former soviet economies started rebuilding , but some nations still expected those discount rates. Ukraine got a discount after a certain point only for handling transit of oil and gas.

Fyi ukraine is still reliant on russian oil and gas, now they just buy it from eu countries who buy russian gas, and charge them first world prices plus extra shipping to sell them the same russian gas. I hope they do not try to ditch out on payments with eu exporters, as I doubt they would hold leniency and likely shut off gas supplies faster than russia did, as they do not have to worry about lost profits like russia did with ukraine.

Political table set for battle over Nord Stream 2 in Germany

Is Germany about to yield to pressure from the Trump administration to take a stand against Russia’s Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline? It’s a question that swirled through Europe and Washington Friday, amid news Germany’s ruling Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party had elected Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer to replace Chancellor Angela Merkel as its leader. Ms. Kramp-Karrenbauer is generally seen to support Ms. Merkel and the CDU’s don’t-rock-the boat posture on foreign policy. But she made international headlines ahead of party’s succession vote — a vote that many believe paves the way for her to eventually succeed Ms. Merkel as chancellor — by suggesting Germany might be wise to reconsider its years-old embrace of Russian oil and gas activity in the heart of Europe. Moscow’s ongoing provocations in Ukraine during recent weeks have exposed the political sensitivity around Western European support for things such as the Russian government-owned Nord Stream 2 pipeline, Ms. Kramp-Karrenbauer said in a televised debate at the start of the week. At issue, specifically, are Moscow’s actions in the Kerch Strait, a narrow waterway that links the Sea of Azov to the Black Sea and separates the Crimean Peninsula, which the Kremlin annexed from Ukraine in 2014, from the Russian mainland.

Germany should change course as France did in regard to the two small aircraft carriers France had built for Russia. France sold them to Egypt. Nord Stream 2 can only end badly for Germany and Europe.

Last week Putin threatened Russian energy supplies to Belarus unless that country acceded to Moscow's demands for "greater integration" (a euphemism for subservience). Putin won't hesitate to use energy as a geopolitical weapon.

Russia-Germany gas pipe condemned by EU

The extension to the Nord Stream gas pipe line named Nord Stream 2 - connecting Russia to Germany - has been condemned by the European Parliament as a risk to “European energy security” in a vote on a resolution calling for the project to be cancelled. The Parliament adopted the resolution by 433 votes to 105, with 30 abstentions. In the document, the MEPs called the gas pipeline a “a political project that poses a threat to European energy security” because the pipeline by-passes Ukraine. The Nord Stream pipeline runs off the coast of Finland, from Vyborg in the Russia Federation to Greifswald in Germany for a total 1,222km and is the longest such pipeline in the world.

NordStream 2 is a Russian Trojan horse that will compromise European independence and EU security.
