ST PETERSBURG, RUSSIA: President Vladimir Putin has said that Russia did not want a new Cold war with the West and did not like to think it was slipping into one.

"I am sure that nobody wants that. We certainly do not want that," Putin said during a question and answer session at the St Petersburg International Economic Forum.

Putin also criticised NATO's expansion, warning there would be consequences if the alliance continued what he said was its one-sided policy against Russia. If both sides coordinated on defence, he said there would be no new Cold War.

If Russia does not want a Cold War with the West, Putin should rethink his approach and cease application of the instruments prescribed by the Gerasimov Doctrine. But he probably needs the confrontation to stay in power. That is always a weakness of autocrats.

Of course they don't. Their economy simply couldn't handle the military build-up.

What they do want is to get as close to reigniting a cold war without actually triggering it, meanwhile grabbing up what they can get away with by making sure that our cost/benefit analysis will lean in favor of not spending blood & treasure.

Of course, what our politicians need to learn is that neither kissing Putin's rear (Bush, Trump) nor giving empty but mean-sounding speeches (Obama) are going to do a damned thing.

It's like bread and circus, the Russian economy is stuffed and Putin needs a distraction, so what better than stirring up the ethnic Russian Ukrainians to have an excuse to invade, Putin wants to recreate the old USSR and will stir up the ethnic Russians in the Baltic states for an excuse to invade, you know the old Nazi excuse before they invaded tried and true.

Of course they don't want a Cold War. They'd just like the West to roll over and give them everything they want without a fight.
