Russia never accepted that Ukraine was it's own nation, Russian mentality does not really accept any non- great powers as being real independent nations. Thus they couldn't fathom that Ukraine of their own free will would seek EU or NATO membership, all had to be some machinations by a "real" nation. Likewise they never took the idea that Ukraine has an army seriously, only real nations have real armies. Thus they didn't think there would be any opposition when they entered Ukraine.

So where do we go for Russian version of events? Mind you, I am not arguing your finding Sputnik unreliable, just pointing out that it appears to be the only outlet for Russian version. Russian propaganda overall is not reliable. One of the few independent and trustworthy sources with news from Russia is https://www.themoscowtimes.com/ , that has it's main office in Amsterdam after being forced out of Russia. Another independent Russian media source is https://meduza.io/en which is run by Russian exiles in Latvia.

And honestly even TASS, which is completely Russian state controlled is somewhat more credible than RT and Sputnik, because they are not controlled by asslickers and are more subtle and restrained in their propaganda.

Looks like they underestimated the fight in the dog! Putin's army has also shown that it may not be of the quality that we have thought. Logistics, training, maintenance of materials, all look suspect.
You just can't cower to threats by Putin, he'll continue to take what he pleases.

Yeah, Russia's military seems to be in shambles right from the start. I think if we do a detailed breakdown of the phases of the war so far, Russia comes off as unprepared and incompetent.
If MAD/Nukes were not part of the equation, Russia would be a sitting duck right now...demonstrating its weakness and lack of preparedness to the world, while also invading a democracy-seeking sovereign.

Gas/Oil and nukes is really all they have at this point, it's so sad for the Russian people.
