MOSCOW — The Russian parliament Wednesday granted President Vladimir Putin authorization to use military force in Syria, where Putin deployed warplanes and battle tanks earlier this month and has called for an international coalition to battle the Islamic State.

The unexpected move capped a speedy military and diplomatic effort by Russia in recent weeks to bolster the government of Bashar al-Assad, a longtime Moscow ally who is deadlocked in a bloody war with secular and Islamist rebel groups.

He really thrives on danger, doesn't he. Maybe he needs it to feel like a man.
But this is really taking the cookie. The thought of 8 or nine countries' war machinery on combat missions some enemies in other countries, some friends and some lose cannons supporting the various local heavies and with totally contrary aims is staggering. This guy is a throwback to the times of Russian conquest, but armed with horrific weapons.

Is this senseless rambling had some point, or you've simply read too many "ebil Putler" articles today?!?

The notion that some of the forces fighting Assad are "secular" is mostly just a dream. In any case, if the rebels are victorious...there is almost no chance that secularism will prevail. If the rebels win, Syria will become a fundamentalist Islamic state...and will pose a greater danger to the world than it does now.

Apparently America has not learned the lesson that knocking a despot out of power in the Middle East has almost no chance of ending up with a better, more stable situation for the people of the region or the world...and almost 100% chance of things going from bad to much, much, much worse.

I hope Putin succeeds in keeping Assad in power. If he fails, whatever comes next in Syria will be a nightmare compared with what is now.

As if Putin needed parliament, Russian military personnel and equipment are already in Syria.

Ahh back to the ol' US/Russia proxy wars in the Middle East again.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

How are air strikes by Russia going to be any more effective than air strikes by anyone else?

Seems like a mess of collateral damage already - though I'm not sure when child victims become categorised as teenage militants in these reports?

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights earlier said at least 27 people were killed in airstrikes on areas in the western province of Homs. The strikes targeted northern areas in the Homs countryside. Six children were among the dead, while dozens were wounded, the organisation added.

Russia launches first airstrikes against targets in Syria, says US | World news | The Guardian

You know, we don't like this or that leader, because we see them as bad men, over there.

Does it not yet occur to us that it TAKES a bad man to keep those areas in line? Do we still view all other ares that AREN'T the US, through the same lens that we view the US?

Different strokes for different folks.

I think the point is that the strikes (contrary to the Western ones) are going be closely to coordinated with the needs of the Syrian army, and be conducted on targets that might pose the greatest strategical threat at that point in time - including non ISIS targets, leaders of various "opposition groups", etc...
Imo on of the reasons for such support on the ground is to stabilize the Assad controlled territories, and eliminate any possible dire threats to his forces/regime.
