I don't think they will be fringe groups much longer. Their elected leaders ignore anyone that doesn't like multiculture. It is a failure(multiculture) they just will not admit.

Results won't be official until the last votes have been counted this afternoon (Monday), but it can already be said that the lead that Hofer (the far right candidate) was assigned in the opinion polls has shrunk to nothing. Everything points to a 50:50 result (each for Hofer/FPÖ and van der Bellen/Greens).

The FPÖ has incidentally been around for decades, even forming part of government in coalitions. They finally wore themselves out in internal power games and general incompetence and there's no sign that they would actually achieve any considerable gains in a national election.

As has been pointed out the president of Austria has little power in the political arena and does not govern the country at all.

Most likely whoever loses will challenge the result

Yeah, it's not like we don't have previous form from very far right Austrians with greater pretentious of grandeur...

At their Kornblumenball, the FPÖ are also trying to throw off pretensions to modern musical tastes and listening to good old oompah music, classical music and local folk music at upcoming conferences. Not for them any of the modern forms of music that has any link to origins on cotton plantations long ago in the U.S.

Otherwise, they have been careful though -

Freedom Party has moved on a long way from the heyday of its firebrand leader, Joerg Haider, who died in a car crash in 2008. Back in the 1980s and 90s, Haider openly praised aspects of the Third Reich. These days, Freedom Party members who veer in that direction are quickly silenced or removed from their posts.

They're playing the long game - funny because that is also what people claim some immigrant elements are doing.

Van der Bellen is actually an independent. Still a Green party member he resigned from all positions he held with them and for them some time ago. He refused to run on the Green ticket, very much to the chagrin of that party, but his refusal was rooted into not wanting to be beholden to them.

So the Greens are actually not in charge but wouldn't be either, even if he'd run for them. The Pres. in Austria has very little power, his/her role being more in the representative field.

That's what countries have to make do with if they don't have a queen/Queen.:mrgreen:

Don't mention that to Austrians, they've been foisting the bugger onto Germany forever. Just like they lay claim to Mozart (more actively German than Austrian) and would also grab Beethoven if they thought they could get away with it.:mrgreen:

They have a hard enough time living down having been colonized by Germans ever since those crushed the occupying Magyars.

Another historical version (that I'll of course not vouch for) is that they came into being when the Roman legions left their footsore and venereals behind. :2razz:

They've been playing that ever since their inception in 1956. With varying success, none of the variations ever having brought them to run the country on their own.

I guess I owe Hofer (the loser by remote margin from the far right) an apology.

He immediately accepted defeat, congratulated the winner and called on all Austrians to be united, rather than re-fight a battle now past.
