Rise of Donald Trump Tracks Growing Debate Over Global Fascism
Former Gov. William F. Weld of Massachusetts equated Donald J. Trump’s immigration plan with Kristallnacht, the night of horror in 1938 when rampaging Nazis smashed Jewish homes and businesses in Germany and killed scores of Jews.

But if it was a provocative analogy, it was not a lonely one. Mr. Trump’s campaign has engendered impassioned debate about the nature of his appeal and warnings from critics on the left and the right about the potential rise of fascism in the United States. More strident opponents have likened Mr. Trump to Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini.

But the discussion comes as questions are surfacing around the globe about a revival of fascism, generally defined as a governmental system that asserts complete power and emphasizes aggressive nationalism and often racism. In places like Russia and Turkey, leaders like Vladimir V. Putin and Recep Tayyip Erdogan employ strongman tactics. In Austria, a nationalist candidate came within three-tenths of a percentage point of becoming the first far-right head of state elected in Europe since World War II.

President Enrique Peña Nieto of Mexico criticized Mr. Trump’s plans to build a wall on the border and to bar Muslims from entering the United States. “That’s the way Mussolini arrived and the way Hitler arrived,” he said. The actor George Clooney called Mr. Trump “a xenophobic fascist.” Louis C. K., the comic, said, “The guy is Hitler.” Eva Schloss, the 87-year-old stepsister of Anne Frank, said Trump “is acting like another Hitler by inciting racism.” It got to the point that his wife, Melania Trump, was prompted to say, “He’s not Hitler.”

“This could be one of those moments that’s quite dangerous and we’ll look back and wonder why we treated it as ho-hum at a time when we could have stopped it,”

Are the Democrats going to continue to fight one another and allow the split in the party to elect this man President, or are they gonna grow up, pull a John F. Kennedy and unite? At this point it is looking like Donald Trump is going to be President.

Clinton is probably a crook and is certainly not going to give up, I wouldn't think. And BS is having the time of his life and is no better, in any event, only a different kind of danger.

Yes, yes, the left wing media in this country loves to try to tarnish anybody conservative with the "Hitler" brush. Being accused of evoking Godwin's Law doesn't seem to phase them in the least.

Here is a pretty good short summary of leftwing tactics to smear Republicans with the "n" word. N = Nazi:

A Short History Of Liberals Accusing Republicans Of Being "Nazis"

Even now some are trying to make Reagan's America into something nefariously Hitler-ish:

Newsbusters closes their observation of that with this:
It's hard to see how the left can get out of their electoral funk by utterly smearing President Reagan as an enemy of democracy and a comparable figure to Hitler. That's no formula for winning over Americans.
Reagan = Hitler? The Washington Post Likes That Play

Wouldn't it be refreshing to have political discourse on the pros and cons of various concepts, issues, and programs instead of the incessant childish effort to make anybody you don't agree with look like a villain?

Donald Trump isn't a Republican. He's an Authoritarian ethno-Nationalist and a Xenophobic demagogue. Who else do we know from history that can be described as such?

Donald Trump isn't a Republican.

I don't see a single word or phrase in my post that refers to Donald Trump as a Republican.

However, he is a Republican in that he will be at the top of the Republican ticket come November.

He's not a conservative either. /= Authoritarianism is not conservatism.

Who else have you described?

He's not a conservative either. /= Authoritarianism is not conservatism.

I find nothing in my post whatsoever that specifically identifies Donald Trump as a conservative. Though conservatives do demand respect for the U.S. Constitution, support the common defense, and promote respect for and enforcement of the law, all which requires quite a bit of authoritarianism.

The supreme irony of these references to fascism is that Trump is the least right-wing of the GOP runners. It goes to show how far the lunatic fringe has dragged the Republican Party.

Wrong. The constitution was put in place specifically to shut out authoritarians.

Wrong. The constitution was put in place specifically to shut out authoritarians.

The Constitution was put into place to allow the people to govern themselves which requires allowing them to establish laws to protect themselves. People like you have been trying to restore some equivalent of a monarchy ever since. So who is the authoritarian here?

The Constitution was put into place to allow the people to govern themselves which requires allowing them to establish laws to protect themselves.
That is the exact opposite of Authoritarianism. How do you expect me to take you seriously?
People like you have been trying to restore some equivalent of a monarchy ever since.
Now I really don't take you seriously. People like me? Libertarians?

:lamo :lamo :lamo

So who is the authoritarian here?

Still Donald Trump.

Wrong. The constitution was put in place specifically to shut out authoritarians.

What has Trump said that is against the Constitution?

I prefer to throw the word fascism onto that big stinking pile of other overused buzz words and terms.

hater
homo-phobe
Islamo-phobe
racist
gun nutters
anti gun nutters
right wing nut job
left wing nut job
fairness & social justice
white privilege
misogynist
extremist

...............................................................etc. etc. etc.

Only a spineless Progressive would consider securing a nation's borders as fascist.

Good thing I'm not a 'spineless Progressive' and this isn't about 'securing' a nation's borders.

He is not right-wing at all. Xenophobic pronouncements may be associated in Europe with "far right" elements, but in America "right" and "left" were historically defined as proponents of less invasive or more invasive government. Trump clearly has no problem with the State dominating and eroding the Society - only put him in charge of the machine, and everything will be fine.
