The Driving force behind Procul Harum died of cancer a couple days ago at the age of 76. His song "A whiter shade of Pale" was called the perfect rock song by several other musicians and is considered one of the epic works of progressive rock. Here is one of my favorites he wrote.

Another big hit below, nearly rivalling "Whiter Shade of Pale", but of course it was not enshrined throughout posterity as Whiter Shade of Pale is, which has become an anthem of sorts.

"Salty Dog" doesn't get airplay these days; not much 'art rock' does. But it was popular in its time.

Enjoy!

I don't know what the saddest joke about the Rock and Roll Hall of fame is in terms of some of the lame non rock acts they have included, but the exclusion of prog rock gods-Procul Harum, ELP and Jethro Tull is proof what a lame ass operation the R&RHOF is
another favorite of mine

Gotta' run, unfortunately!

But . . . I loved Prog Rock & Art Rock while it was happening. However as we progressed out of it in the late seventies into the eighties, and I then occasionally revisited it, it seemed a bit pompous & overbearing.

Then as years turned into decades, and I recently started listening to my old Yes, Genesis, Tull, and King Crimson, I was struck by just how good the damn stuff was! It was indeed 'art'! And, I was lucky to be from an era where 'art' was being produced, featured, played, and consumed!

If you want to watch something interesting, and maybe rekindle a bit of respect for Ian Anderson, check out the video below. It helps if you have some understanding of music & theory, but not necessary. It is long, so I'll understand if you TL;DR. But it's something you can get into and enjoy, if it's something you otherwise appreciate. Welcome back to 1972, as seen from 2021!

Take care!

This is one of their instrumentals - Repent Walpurgis. Interesting in that you can hear a lot of their music in this one piece.

Hey, that was pretty good!

I vaguely recall hearing it back in the day, too.

Thanks!

Listening to the above WSP takes me back. I always thought he and Joe Cocker sounded similar. In my late teens (70’s) Jethro Tull was a staple, Billy Joel’s 52nd street 8track got worn out. I miss those days.

The only airplay Conquistador gets around here is a small indie station.

Love that song.

K-SHE out of St Louis was a powerhouse Album Oriented Rock station. For a few glorious years mid to late 70s, they were nearly free form. Sometimes a DJ might play an entire album side, especially on a late night shift. Quite often 2 or 3 songs by the same artist, back to back.

To this day, on Sunday evening from like 7 to midnight, they play several albums in their entirety. They used to do each album uninterrupted, but that went away awhile back. Now they break for commercials. :(

It is basically the Rock and Roll Hall of Lame. Besides the acts you mentioned, add Big Mama Thorton, Joe Cocker, Peter Paul & Mary, War, Link Wray, and so many more who were not invited. But somehow KISS, N.W.A, and The Lovin Spoonful made it in.

I blame the 'Big Chill'! (Movie) ;)
No, that scene was cool. Whiter Shade of Pale and cross fades to You Can't Always Get What You Want.

Boomers are losing their heroes to old age instead of drugs or stupidity. It’s going to be weird when it happens to Gen-X.

And I will complain about the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as well when the last surviving member of Hüsker Dü dies.

Oh yeah, I forgot about Bad Company. I remember in high school having all the Bad Company albums on 8 track. My 9 year old little brother I think had all the Kiss albums....

no, correct that, he had all the Kiss action figures and a Kiss lunchbox.

Gene Simmons. The Bozo the clown of rock and roll LOL

And yet Keith Richards, Paul McCartney, Ringo Star, and Pete Townshend are still rockin' in the free world.

Although McCartney is looking more and more like Angela Landsbury every year.

BTW, here is quiz for you Gen-X folks: Can you name the band McCartney was in before Wings?
