His was, literally, a milestone achievement.

Bannister, first to break 4-minute mile, dies

Lord Sebastien Coe and Steve Cram led tributes to the late Sir Roger Bannister, hailing the man who broke the four-minute mile as "inspirational" and a man who sat right in the middle of "ambition and mankind".
News of Bannister's death was announced Sunday, his family saying he died peacefully Saturday in Oxford, England.
On a windy late afternoon in Oxford on May 6, 1954, Bannister ran four laps on a cinder track in three minutes 59.4 seconds to crack the mythical 4-minute mile -- a feat many had thought humanly impossible. A few months later in 1954, Bannister beat Australian rival John Landy in the "Miracle Mile" or "Mile of the Century" at the Empire Games in Vancouver, British Columbia, as both men ran under four minutes.
Bannister then gave up running to pursue a long and distinguished medical career. . . .

RIP...

And this was before the modern running shoe, medical and nutritional advancements, etc.

RIP Sir.

Medical experts told him the body couldn't supply the requisite oxygen needed. Couldn't be done they all said.

Engineers had their reasons too. They were unanimous as well.

And why not? The 4 minute barrier had lasted for all eternity.

Well Roger knew it could be done. After countless failures he broke the unbreakable record. The record that had stood the test of all time.

Within 10 years 7 more people broke the record.

Did we as a human race evolve that fast?

If ever there was a perfect example of the power off the mind, surely this is it.

It wasn't brain surgery. Oh wait. Dr. Bannister was in fact a Brain Surgeon.

We lost a giant of a man.

Accomplished what many at the time thought impossible.

RIP Sir Roger Bannister
