Muhammad Ali, the silver-tongued boxer and civil rights champion who famously proclaimed himself "The Greatest" and then spent a lifetime living up to the billing, is dead.

Ali died Friday at a Phoenix-area hospital, where he had spent the past few days being treated for respiratory complications, a family spokesman confirmed to NBC News. He was 74.

"After a 32-year battle with Parkinson's disease, Muhammad Ali has passed away at the age of 74. The three-time World Heavyweight Champion boxer died this evening," Bob Gunnell, a family spokesman, told NBC News.

damn sad

Not too shabby considering all the licks he took.

This is a win.

Seriously.

Amazing athlete.

Amazing man (from what I knew of him).

What he said and how he said it was probably more important to me then his boxing ability.

Very sad, he was a good person, and he did a lot of good charity for Phoenix.

Above all, he was The Greatest.

I pretty much figured out what hospital he was at, it the one where my brother is a nurse and where my father passed.

Damn, he was the genuine article....

Re: Muhammad Ali, 'The Greatest of All Time', Dead at 74

Condolences to his family. One of the greatest boxers ever and the end of an era.

I'll miss the guy. Love him or hate him he was his own man. The guy stuck to his principles and gave a whole lot of kids something positive to strive for.

You agreed with his racism?

Re: Muhammad Ali, 'The Greatest of All Time', Dead at 74

I am not familiar with his racism.

Some interesting quotes.

In a press conference articulating his opposition to the Vietnam War, Ali stated, "my enemy is the white people, not the Vietcong".[18] In relation to integration, he said: "We who follow the teachings of Elijah Muhammad don't want to be forced to integrate. Integration is wrong. We don't want to live with the white man; that's all."[103] And in relation to inter-racial marriage: "No intelligent black man or black woman in his or her right black mind wants white boys and white girls coming to their homes to marry their black sons and daughters."[103] Indeed, Ali's religious beliefs at the time included the notion that the white man was "the devil" and that white people were not "righteous".

I am no more moved by the death of Ali than he would have been saddened by news of my demise.

~ at the time ~

Shame you missed that. Considering that he'd come back home an Olympic medallist to a US where segregation was de rigeur that reaction to racism he faced is possibly why he felt that way. Cause enough to throw away his gold medal and refuse to fight for a country that graded him a 2nd class citizen.

Significant however that you were compelled to comment.

Yep. I must be some sort of attention seeker. Perhaps a bit like you with your 12,566 comments.

I agree. Ali was a better politician than boxer. I mean, he lost to Leon Spinks, for crying out loud.

He was an amazing athlete...and in my opinion, a damn fine human being.

He WAS The Greatest. I don't have many heroes...but he definitely is one.

I saw a picture of him yesterday...and was unable to make it look like him. I spoke with Nancy about it when she got home from work...and we looked up pictures of him just to see the great man in his prime.

Now this morning...he is gone.

RIP Muhammad.

My favorite picture of him:

Its like saying Robert Byrd suddenly stopped being a racist when it wasn't cool anymore. I would say that both of them went to their graves with racist minds, but neither could comprehend much at their later years.

That is 12,566 in 9 years. If you stay here that long you are on pace to post @18,000 in 9 years and from the two posts I have seen it will 18,000 posts not worth the time to post or read.

One was brought up a racist and enjoyed the privilege, the other reacted to events in the 60's and nothing he did since that short period reflects on him as a racist. Try again.

Besides, if we judge a thing by a short period of time - using your example do you agree the USA (because of 200+ years of segregationist, racist laws) is a racist country?

Better to have 12000+ cogent posts than 1515 bits of rubbish eh?

Re: Muhammad Ali, 'The Greatest of All Time', Dead at 74

Ali was a damn good boxer, but he wasn't the best boxer of all time...........not even close.

He was a product of the civil rights era, and his personal crusade against discrimination made him a hero to many. I didn't like a lot of things that he said, but they needed to be said none the less. He was the perfect guy to come along at the time.

He could be funny, stubborn, cocky, mouthy, along with a million other worthy adjectives.

Now you have really upset me. (Why can we not post sound effects? Muffled sobbing would be the right thing here.) Anyway I thought that only Canadians were allowed to end their comments with 'eh?'.

Ali was mad about a lot of things regarding racism, but he was not a "racist at heart".

He said many things that made white people uncomfortable, but most of them were justified in my opinion.

He was a ambassador in many ways.
