The Battle of the Coral Sea stopped the Japanese advance through the Pacific toward Australia. The USS Lexington played a heroic part.

Wreckage of WWII aircraft carrier found

Washington (AFP) - Wreckage from the USS Lexington, a US aircraft carrier which sank during World War II, has been found in the Coral Sea, a search team led by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen announced Monday.
The wreckage was found Sunday by the team's research vessel, the R/V Petrel, some 3,000 meters (two miles) below the surface more than 500 miles (800 kilometers) off the eastern coast of Australia. . . .

3K deep. Now, that's an impressive search.

This is a recovery job for ... Dirk Pitt!

Mammoet. A Dutch crane and rigging company. They raised a Russian sub years ago, used massive barges and strand jacks similar to the small-scale examples used to pre- and post-tension concrete cables.
An aircraft carrier might just be a tad on the large size, though. She'll probably just seep where she is.

The Kursk was only 100 meters underwater.
