Right-wing former finance minister Rodrigo Chaves will take over as Costa Rica’s new president on May 8 after winning Sunday’s election, poised to oversee the challenge of reinvigorating the country’s battered economy.

With 96 percent of the votes counted, Chaves held a close to six percentage point lead in provisional results over Figueres, the centrist former president, according to the Supreme Electoral Court (TSE).

“I receive with the deepest humility this sacred decision of the Costa Rican people… This result for me is not a medal or a trophy, but an enormous responsibility,” the 60-year-old economist said to a crowd of supporters in the capital San Jose.

Figueres congratulated Chaves and wished him well in his concession speech. “Costa Rica has voted and the people have spoken. Since we are democrats we respect that decision,” the 67-year-old said.

Unemployment and an economic crisis dominated the campaign between two scandal-tainted candidates relieved not to have their past indiscretions take center stage. Chaves was once demoted for sexual harassment, while Figueres was previously investigated for corruption.

But with 23 percent of the population living in poverty and unemployment soaring to 14 percent alongside a series of corruption scandals, Costa Ricans seemed more focused on the economy as they elected the successor to President Carlos Alvarado.

Voting was carried out “in peace and tranquility,” said TSE spokesman Gustavo Ramon. Chaves will take over from the unpopular Alvarado next month, faced with the major challenge of reigniting an economy in crisis.

Costa Rica has been described as the “happiest” country in Latin America and praised for its political stability, environmental policies and eco-tourism. But the vital tourism industry was hard hit by the coronavirus pandemic.

Alongside Peru, it suffered the largest fall in employment figures in the region between 2019 and 2020. “Costa Rican society was not poor, they made it poor. Costa Rican society was not unequal, they made it unequal,” said Chaves, who voted in mid-morning at a school in the capital’s city center.

Pretty good day for the Far-Right and Autocrats yesterday, winning all 3 races.

Unlike the elections in Hungary and Serbia yesterday, which were landslides for the Autocratic Right, this election in Costa Rica was quite close: 52.8% for the Right-winger vs. 47.2% for the Left-winger.

It just goes to show everyone that the radical right wing is better at lying and brainwashing people than the liberal parties. It has something to do with moral fortitude. They have none.

Right and left in these countries are not the equivalent of right and left in the US

Is he...right wing? Or just a right opposition party?
Ok so I briefly looked him up. I visited Costa Rica in 2019 and the country did not seem particularly vulnerable or friendly towards right wing politics. Keep in mind this is the country that dismantled their entire military and put their previous military budget into providing education.
In terms of policy, there was little to distinguish Chaves and Figueres. As such, one focal point of the runoff campaigns was the alleged scandals facing both men.
Corruption was a major concern for Costa Ricans, with 18 percent naming it as their top issue in polling. Chaves blamed past governments for the country’s corruption woes, pledging to battle corruption when he got in office.
Chaves called for an increase in social spending to address economic stagnation, inequality, and rising crime.

Now, I definitely do not like Chaves. Policy aside, he has several fairly credible sounding accusations of sexual harassment. He is also decidedly a Regan type free market advocate. However, calling him right wing or comparing him to Orban or Putin is fairly ridiculous from what I can see from his campaign.

On what basis do you label him a far-right autocrat, Tender Branson? Or do you just call anyone right of center a right-wing autocrat?

That is true, but we have not been presented any evidence that this person is a far-right illiberal authoritarian figure like Turkey's Erdogan or Hungary's Orban, or a ruthless nationalist autocrat like Vladimir Putin. I would like to see some evidence that this man is either far-right or an autocrat rather than just taking malign, unevidenced accusations as read.

Same. I keep seeing articles claiming he is 'far-right' but not citing literally...anything. Don't get me wrong, I don't like him at all. I find this pretty objectionable;
The U.S.-educated president-elect has pledged to reduce the government’s fiscal deficit and said he favors a close relationship with the International Monetary Fund. The government signed a $1.8 billion extended fund facility with the multilateral lender last year.

In his victory speech Chaves said he would modernize the state, create jobs and govern with “transparency and austerity.” (Source)
But from what I understand his opponent was also a pro-market foreign investor friendly candidate. So...? Like is that it? I genuinely don't know and it is hard to find information on his policies.

Reuters tags him as a social democrat, so there's that.

Lol, Chaves is definitely no Social Democrat. Maybe you or Reuters confuse him with his opponent ?

Anyway, he is not a Far-Right politician either.

What I meant in my original post was Orban and Vucic, Chaves is just right.

I don't know anything about him. I am simply pointing to Reuters' assessment of the man.
