Sen. Harry Reid of Nevada, a former boxer and Capitol Hill cop, took command of dispirited Senate Democrats as minority leader Tuesday, promising to work with President Bush where he can but warning there's punch left in the opposition party.
"I would always rather dance than fight," Reid said after fellow Democratic senators unanimously elevated him from assistant leader. "But I know how to fight."

After losing four seats in the elections Nov. 2, Democrats in the Senate are at their lowest ebb since before World War II. Reid replaces Sen. Tom Daschle, D-S.D., who was narrowly defeated for re-election after Republicans depicted him as standing in the way of President Bush's agenda. It was the first defeat of a party's Senate leader in half a century.

Reid, in an interview after his selection, said he regarded the campaigning against Daschle by Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn., as an action that was not good for the Senate, which requires collegiality to function. But Reid said he talked with Frist after his election and that the two could cooperate. "I have a philosophy: You have to work with people," Reid said.

This guy is pretty laid back and known as a conservative democrat. Can get get the job done?
