This is my biggest fear. I don't think Russia plans on just toppling the government and installing a puppet, they want to absorb Ukraine entirely and erase their existence. If we allow them to get absorbed into this evil, it's unlikely they'll ever come out of it.

That would be even more insane than my prior supposition of "freeing" the Ukraine of its corrupt "Nazified" government. That would mean incorporation of Ukraine into a Greater Russia, and a permanent military occupation. That is beyond Vietnam and Afghanistan levels of vainglorious stupidity.

Considering they seem to have used Lukashenka's weakness and inability to keep himself in power on his own, to basically occupy Belarus and turned Lukashenka himself into a powerless non-entity, they have already started absorbing Belarus, so to think the goal wasn't the same for Ukraine is at this point naive.

Belarussian troops have crossed the border into Ukraine and Russian cruise missiles have been fired at Kyiv from the Belarus side.
