The US military is developing software that will let it secretly manipulate social media sites by using fake online personas to influence internet conversations and spread pro-American propaganda.A Californian corporation has been awarded a contract with United States Central Command (Centcom), which oversees US armed operations in the Middle East and Central Asia, to develop what is described as an "online persona management service" that will allow one US serviceman or woman to control up to 10 separate identities based all over the world.
The project has been likened by web experts to China's attempts to control and restrict free speech on the internet. Critics are likely to complain that it will allow the US military to create a false consensus in online conversations, crowd out unwelcome opinions and smother commentaries or reports that do not correspond with its own objectives.
The discovery that the US military is developing false online personalities – known to users of social media as "sock puppets" – could also encourage other governments, private companies and non-government organisations to do the same.

Looks like we have our own "IDF internet" army coming our way. No that wasnt some "anti-Jew" joke, that was simply stating the the IDF kinda already does this and it seems like we are following their path.

Psyops is nothing new. nor is people being paid to post on the internet to try to influence others.

The more this government proves Alex Jones right, the more I am terrified...

So, who here is a government shill?

(looks around suspiciously)

How do you know?

How do I know which?

I know psyops exist because I know people who did it in the army.

I know that people get paid to post things on the internet because the internet tells me so and if it is on the internet then it is true (hint: google it)

There's only one way to counter this nefarious plan. Everyone needs to make socks, lots of 'em.

I'm almost as shocked as I was when the cute girl on facebook PMd and asked me to vote for her bikini pics.

I don't believe facebook allows the same person to have multiple profiles.

Does anyone know how to apply for one of these jobs? Trolling the gov while being paid to troll the public would be a blast, until I got fired. Maybe if they're union jobs, they'd have a hard time firing me.

How would they know? You just sign up with a different email address. ****, my dog has a facebook profile.

Edit: s h i t is edited out!?

There isn't a doubt in my mind that the major political parties did this the last two major elections. Well, maybe the Republicans didn't have their act together in 2008...

Users can report fake accounts. Facebook also has an automated system of checking this--I created a fake account once as a joke and it was deleted. If fake accounts used for spying ever becomes a concern, I think it is reasonable to assume facebook would enforce the rule of one account per person more strongly.

Edit: s h i t is edited out!?
Ye**** is.

EDIT: Lol really? Even when the word contains s h i t but is not that actual word? We can't even say ****ake mushroom...

How do they know who are duplicates? If you sign up with a different email address, how would they know? My dog has been on there for two and a half years. There are lots of fake accounts.

Facebook: 8.7 percent are fake users | Internet & Media - CNET News

**** being ****ing blocked is ****ty.

Like I just said, users can report them, and facebook has a system that checks--I don't know how it works, but it worked for my fake account with a different email. But the take away point is that if people were actually concerned about spies infiltrating facebook with fake accounts, there would likely be more of a crackdown on facebook's part. If fake accounts are prank accounts or accounts of a dog, there isn't really a serious privacy concern.

What is new about this? private parties do it al the time.

They have crap like this even in the bible. "Get this many followers of this tribe and stick them here as musicians. Get this many followers and stick them here in positions of authority. Get this 3,500 followers from this tribe and have them be "givers-of-praise". Now the government can do it on a massive scale with fake internet people.

True story. This is simple blackhat SEO, businesses and individuals have engaged in it for years. It's one of the reasons why forums like this have "no multiple accounts per user" policies as standard, because it's so common for people to make multiple accounts.
