Researchers turn stem cells into sperm
LONDON, England (UPI) -- German researchers say they`ve found a way to create early-stage sperm cells from human bone marrow.
The research published in the Reproduction: Gamete Biology was carried out by a team of scientists led by Professor Karim Nayernia when he was at the University of Gottingen, Medical News Today reported.
The findings will help researchers understand more about how sperm cells are created, the report said.
Nayernia, who is now doing stem cell research at Britain`s Newscastle University, and his team isolated the mesenchymal stem cells in sperm from male volunteers. They cultured the cells and coaxed them into becoming male reproductive germ cells. Genetic markers showed the presence of partly-developed sperm cells called spermatagonial stem cells.

Nayernia gained worldwide acclaim in July 2006 when he announced he and colleagues had created sperm cells from mouse embryonic stem cells and used these to fertilize mice eggs, resulting in seven live births.
