Republicans urge Trump to greenlight Russia sanctions vote after incursion into Poland https://thehill.com/homenews/senate/5497400-russia-sanctions-package-gop-trump/
Republican senators are urging President Trump to give them the green light to vote on a Russia sanctions package in the wake of Moscow's
incursion into Poland's air space and Russian President
Vladimir Putin's seeming disinterest in ending the war with Ukraine.
Senate Republicans have pushed for months for Trump to back the chamber's bipartisan package that would punish nations that import Russian oil, gas and uranium, only to see it languish without his support.
Sens.
Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and
Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) rolled out the package in mid-July, but it has remained dormant as Trump gave negotiations with Putin a full go, headlined by their meeting last month in Alaska.
But little diplomatic progress has been made since that sit-down and the ensuing White House meeting with Ukrainian President
Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders. And in that time Putin has repeatedly launched barrages of drones and missiles into Ukraine, including the
heaviest attack on Kyiv of the war on Sunday, which damaged a key government building.

Trump said, "It could have been a mistake", regarding the drone strikes inside Poland. It was no mistake. Putin knows exactly what he's doing. This isn't only Europe's problem, the US is still a member of NATO, and NATO needs to speak collectively, with one message, then there needs to be actions. Trump has said, "I'm not happy about it", so why isn't he doing something about it? Trump is the leader of the most powerful country in the world. Do something about it! The US needs to put more sanctions on Russia, and send new military aid to Ukraine. Putin is coming into NATO airspace, and he's pushing to see the reaction. Russia did this with Moldova and Romania, but not with 19 drones, like Russia did in Poland. That's not a 'mistake', that's deliberate. It wasn't enough to trigger a full Article 5 response, but just enough to intimidate. Putin gets a lot from a strike into Poland. He gathers information and intelligence on what NATO will, or won't do, and he gauges response time. He's pushing NATO without any consequence. The US has to do something, and do it quickly.
The meeting with Putin in Alaska only enhanced Putin's international legitimacy, and made Trump back away from his threats of sanctions. Putin saw this meeting as a signal to ramp up Russia's aggression.
