WASHINGTON — Senate Republicans scrambled on Friday to find a way to block Roy S. Moore’s path to the Senate, exploring extraordinary measures to rid themselves of their own nominee in Alabama after accusations emerged that he had made sexual advances on four teenage girls when he was in his 30s.

One of the remedies being looked at is delaying the special election in Alabama, thus enabling them to replace Moore on the ticket. I can get behind this move. After all, Alabama is a Republican state, and a Republican should therefore represent it, but not a child molester. This move allows the GOP to clean up it's own back yard, and put someone in office who is not a pervert. Democrats who want the election to go ahead as scheduled, with Moore on the ballot, because they believe they have a chance to capture this seat, are being just as dishonest as those who are supporting Moore for none other than political reasons.

Let Republicans do what they have to in order to put an honest man in that seat. That I can get behind. All other arguments by both Democrats and Republicans is just a lot of horse manure. It's time to get the smell out of the air.

Let the GOP organize a write in campaign for someone else - maybe Strange - just like Lisa Murkowski did in Alaska in a winning effort.

Dishonest answer. Murkowski ran as an independent after being defeated in a primary. She had plenty of time to campaign. On the other hand, in Alabama, ballots have already been printed with Moore's name on them, and there are only a couple of weeks until the election. The GOP deserves an honest chance to win an election in a state that is deep red. If they choose to be honest and boot Moore from the ticket, then we have to be fair and honest and allow them a chance to print ballots with his replacement, even if that means delaying the election. Bottom line is that Alabama is not even remotely similar to the situation in Alaska. Just another dishonest talking point here.

No, it is anti-democratic. Why? Because we both know that the GOP will use this to abuse the system to make sure one of their people will get the seat no matter what. They chose a racist pedophile religious nutjob in the first place, well knowing about his history, and they would only replace him with someone similar. Any moderate GOPer would never be considered. It is time for the GOP to learn from their mistakes and pay the piper.

Plus if, he gets elected regardless.. that will only prove that the Alabama GOP voters are a bunch of pedophiles and racists.

What kind of banana republic delays an election to guarantee victory to one side because it "should" win?

(Putting aside the dubious notion that the party that not only put a child molester on the ballot but is currently going through increasingly disgusting contortions to defend his conduct "should" represent the state. Look at the rationalizations from prominent Alabama Republicans over the past few days and tell me that organization should be guaranteed a victory in a U.S. Senate race. Yuck.)

So, basically, you think Republicans should nominate a Democrat to run?

How is that a dishonest answer since Murkowski ran and won as a write in?

Senator Lisa Murkowski wins Alaska write-in campaign

ANCHORAGE (Reuters) - Alaska Republican Lisa Murkowski Wednesday became the first U.S. senator in more than 50 years to win an election with a write-in campaign as she established an unassailable lead over conservative Tea Party movement favorite Joe Miller.

As far as I am aware - that is the only option open to the establishment GOP who are not happy with Moore. If you know of Alabama law which says otherwise I would be glad to read it.

They have a nominee, they should just go through with the election. If anything against him is should to be true, he can step down or be removed. If it's a smear job, nothing need be done and the press will sweep it under the rug, as if it was no big deal.

Besides being hilariously ant-democratic in principle, delaying an election just to get a winnable republican candidate also ignores the rather obvious dilemma of what happens if Moore refuses to quit.

Dishonest Luther Strange was appointed by dishonest and disgraced former Gov. Bentley. Dishonest Strange as AG held off on prosecuting dishonest and disgraced Bentley to secure his ill-gotten Senate seat ...

Excellent and you hit the nail right on the head.

Allowing any postponement in the election to benefit one part is tantamount to fixing the election.

The delay isn't to guarantee victory to any side. It's to replace a pedophile with a non-pedophile. It's that simple.

So, basically, you think Republicans should nominate a Democrat to run?

No.

Are you saying that GOPers are racist sexist pedophiles.. either all 3 or 1 or 2 of them?

Point is, they have gone through the nomination process, and they picked this racist sexist pedophile, well knowing at least his racist and sexist attitudes. He refuses to step down, so the GOP has to live with it. Bending and breaking the rules to make sure that the seat does not go to the opposition is frankly disgusting. If they are willing to do this to avoid losing the election, then they are willing to stuff ballot boxes as well or worse.

It is not like his "issues" were not known before the GOP voted to nominate him..

Too bad Alabama republicans voted for a pedophile in the primary. That's certainly not the fault of any of the other candidates.

I don't believe the Republicans deserve an honest chance.

They put up a child molester, so they should suffer the trend, maybe Alabama will like it's Democratic Senator.

I'm all for pulling a raw Candidate.

And what should be done to the Democrats if this turns out to be false, which is just as likely as it being true?

GOPoliticos know full well that the delay is to guarantee victory to their side ...

Why should anything be done to the Democrats?

There you go again with that KKK-like mentality that encourages damning someone for simple accusations.

More GOP false equivalence; like delaying Gorsuch ...

Whereas honorable and honest Doug Jones fought the KKK ...

No.

Not biased much, are we? Looks like the pot calling the kettle black.

The delay changes nothing. Everybody still has a fair chance. In all likelyhood, the GOP will win Alabama regardless. It's Alabama.

Why should anything be done to the Democrats?

Because if the election is fixed for the Democrats and then the allegations prove to be false, then the principles of Democracy have been denied to Alabama. Something must be done in response, obviously.

We all know how GOPartisans would be speaking if a Democratic state had this problem ...
