It was not surprising when the assembled delegates at the Republican convention cheered enthusiastically when one of the speakers announced that another police officer in Baltimore had been acquitted of any crimes in the death of Freddie Gray.

The Baltimore Sun reported the decision by Judge Barry G. Williams as follows:

"Based on the law, he (Williams) said, the prosecution did not show that Rice (the policeman) acted in a "grossly negligent manner," required for a manslaughter conviction. It also did not show that Rice acted in an unreasonable way or was aware of and chose to ignore the substantial risk by placing Gray in a police van without a seat belt, which is required for reckless endangerment, he said. And, it did not show that Rice acted "corruptly," which is required for misconduct in office, he said.

Williams said a "mistake" or an "error in judgment" by Rice was not enough to prove the crimes alleged."

There is little doubt that Black Lives Matter was infuriated by this decision and considered it to be just one more example of a corrupt system that allows police officers to avoid the consequences of their actions. The acquittal did nothing to change their view that the officer was guilty and should have been sent to prison.

And yet, these same Republican delegates who cheered this verdict, employed BLM logic with their incessant "Lock Her Up" chants regarding Hillary Clinton. Their view is that the fact Clinton has never been charged with a crime is proof not of her innocence but that the justice system is corrupt.

I see it as a dangerous precedent that political leaders are now encouraging people to substitute their own opinions for a those of a carefully crafted professional criminal justice system. My position is that Republicans chanting "Lock Her Up" sacrifice their moral standing to criticize BLM and are essentially giving encouragement to every vigilante group that wishes to substitute their own idea of justice for what is decided in court.

Its not a precedent you are seeing. It's death throws. After this election the GOP will definitely do a makeover and become born-again. Starting with implementing super-delegates and any other controls they can find to keep out any future Trumps.

I don't think "Lock Her Up" is limited to Trump supporters. I think the great majority of Republicans feel that way. Assuming Trump loses, they will certainly take steps to prevent future Trumps but the concept that Democrats are traitors and criminals is now too deeply engrained. It's still going to be part of whatever new Republican Party arises.

They are running a campaign based on hate. So it's going to seem worse than it actually is. Childish temper tantrums don't usually win very much.

Well, she is a criminal. People have been locked up or fired for less.

Because Hillary is running on a platform of sugar plumbs and rainbows...

Isn't supporting Hillary flying in the face of everything that BLM believes in? She's a rich white person who uses her race and wealth to get away with EVERYTHING. I remind everyone all the time that her lying mouth got an innocent man put in jail and destroyed the life of a close friend (just to name TWO).

She's a vindictive, lying, piece of **** rich bitch . . . I don't care who does and doesn't like her - she DOES belong in jail or at least on her knees begging for forgiveness for every innocent person she's victimized.

Most of that group is republican. Did you not know that ? The democrats nominated her to run for president.

Uhhhh....maybe you should rethink the math there. People who identify as Republican makes up only 26%.

Uhhhh....maybe you should reread the article there. The article you cited says :

"Opinions on the FBI's decision were sharply divided along partisan lines. According to the poll, nearly 90% of Republicans said Clinton should have been charged, while only about 30% of Democrats said the same."

And how many Independents?

Not sure how you made this out to be a Republican thing. 56% of all Americans think Hillary should be charged. That's more than the 55% combined total of people who identify as either Republican or Democrat.

Democratic, Republican Identification Near Historical Lows

It's clear to me this was fixed. The convenient last-minute meeting between the Attorney General and Mr. Clinton served the purpose of giving Ms. Lynch an excuse to remove herself from the whole business. That dumped it in Director Comey's lap, and I think Lynch led him to believe--no doubt through very subtle statements whose meaning a lawyer as intelligent and experienced as Comey could not miss--that his superiors would undercut him if he recommended Mrs. Clinton be prosecuted. He knew that Lynch could have rigged the proceedings by finding Justice Dept. prosecutors who were willing to act more like they were defending her instead of prosecuting her. They could have arranged never to present their strongest evidence to the grand jury, and to downplay the importance of whatever evidence they did present enough to assure that the grand jurors would vote not to indict her.

That is just what the Truman administration did in 1945 in the Amerasia case, which Comey certainly knows all about. The FBI has throughout its history made it a point not to involve itself in political issues. Comey did not want to be remembered as the Director who, for questionable reasons, tried to determine the outcome of a presidential election by recommending Mrs. Clinton be prosecuted, only to have the prosecution fixed so that she was no-billed. What he did, in the end, was clever. He spelled out, in detail, how she had done everything required for a violation of section 793(f), which is one small part of the Espionage Act of 1917. Then, having done that, he said--incongruously--that despite all that strong evidence, it was not reasonable to prosecute her.

By using your words:

sacrifice their moral standing to criticize BLM and are essentially giving encouragement to every vigilante group

You could start right at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. The man who lives there has made a few biased statements without knowing all the facts during his tenure

Believing that someone should be indicted and given a fair trial is not the same thing as shouting "Lock Her Up." Is this what Republicans mean by "law and order?" If 56% of the people think someone is guilty then skip the trial and go directly to jail?

Unfortunately, your point is well taken. Obama on the one hand tells us not to jump to conclusions but then his words strongly hint that he already has. This has been a major failing of his which has contributed to some of the division in the country. However, that said, I think the Republicans have taken this to whole different, and far more dangerous, level.

Not proof that "THE" justice system is corrupt, just the justice system assigned to vet Hillary.
If you can not see that injustice no further reason to try and reach you

black lives matter is a cancer, nothing less

The crowds chanting 'guilty' and 'lock her up' is little more than 'red meat' for the delegates, typical of political conventions and rallies.

If you're too sensitive to handle this, you shouldn't consider being a participant nor an observer of politics, really.

If you think the RNC delegates are offensive, you'd better not watch the TV coverage of the DNC next week. I suspect it'll be it's typical more vile yet.

What I realized is that the chants are out of desperation. Even the Trumpeteers realize their only chance at winning is if Hillary is taken out of the competition. It would be sad but......Trump.

As a counter-point, what do you do when "law and order" has been circumvented and the elites are not actually bound by it while the proletariat class still is? Let them eat cake?

A system which treats some people (or even one person) differently from others is, by definition, a corrupt system. In fact, what other definition is there?

Perhaps you're right about the RNC. I hope so. However, I've been watching political conventions since 1968 and this feels different. If the heated "red meat" rhetoric of BLM is being blamed for inciting the maniacs in Dallas and Baton Rouge, how can political leaders justify the institutional use of similar rhetoric. BLM as an organization never called for police to be killed - only for the guilty ones, as decided by BLM, to be imprisoned.

As to the DNC, I fully expect that if you watch it, you'll want to throw things at the television but I suspect (hope?) they won't cross this line.
