This isn't the big deal as it seems. We tell our Marines that they won't receive their benefits if they die on an American Highway as result of drunk driving or no seat belt. Of course, they will receive their benefits. Don't read into it. It's just a scare tactic to keep soldiers from purchasing commercial gear over using what is provided. The problem with commercial bought gear is that it frequently does not go through the rigors of testing that our issue does. Commercial armor may stop multiple bullets, but is it lightweight? Commercial armor may stop a 9 mil round, but will it stop a 7.62(AK) round?
As with all protective gear in combat, there are times that the hinderance is a liability. It is common to see Marines without their UpArmor plating on their doors and there are times when SAPI Plates slow the movement in tight spaces.
