Republicans are becoming more and more MAGA. Democrats are possibly becoming more socialist. I am more politically homeless than ever before

First, Mamdani for NYC. Now, the mayoral race for Minneapolis.

We already know the GOP is fully MAGA, and it purges non-MAGA from it's midst.

But it seems perhaps the Democratic party is embracing more socialism? I don't know, but it seems that way.

Or maybe it's that the competition is pure shit and this allows for socialists to shine?

So as a fiscal conservative, socially neutral person, I have no party. If more and more candidates embrace one or the other, where does that leave people who support none of the above? It seems that there is no room for people in the middle or thereabouts.

Thoughts?

Actually, socialists have been mayors of cities before. Some were called "Sewage socialists" because of their success in creating modern sewage systems and providing cleaner water.

Perhaps you can find some solace in knowing that socialist leaders in this country will have to moderate any extreme views if they want to get things done. And I suggest they want to get things done.

Don't let municipal politics influence you too, too much. Watch at Governor level and of course a Presidential level. I haven't seem one potential candidate for 2028 who I would consider far left. Newsom comes closest. We'll see who the Senate candidates are but incumbents up for reelection are not at all what you could call far left.

Well, at least in these two instances, I am not a citizen of either city .

But I actually have worse to deal with in Alabama (and it's not socialism!).

Most of what passes for socialism these days is really just a continuation of FDR's New Deal.

Mamdani's government-owned grocery stores are socialism, as are his desire to massively expand the number of public housing units.

Musk is in the process of creating an America Party, and if you get in early, you could be of consequence.

MAGA.

Probably for the best since there hasn’t been a Left of sny consequence in this nation since the early 90s. And the 70s was the last time they were effective and government was able to solve serious problems.

Social Security and SNAP are as well.

MAGA.

I think that the problem is that this country has moved so far to the right in basically everything any criticism of capitalism is seen as wild eyed Marxism that is going to set off youth movements holding little red books over their heads.

Thankfully I live in Canada where I got to vote for a Conservative and no one accused me of being Fascist, and I got to vote for a Liberal and never got called woke or socialist.

If someone feels politically homeless in the US, the first place to point to is the biased media. They can also point to their own narrow-minded view of the word and their small bubbles.

Our political scale is very skewed to the right. The Democrats are barely a center left corporatist party these days. I don't see any real candidate talking about giving the means of production to the workers, so I don't waste much time on "socialism." Shit, no one is even pushing a serious effort to enact the sort of health care system that other first world countries have had since the mid to late 20th century.

The country has been moving left since the 60s e.g. medicare and medicaid, massive expansion of welfare programs through the 1960s and 70s, endless environmental bullshit, and obamacare, which again expanded federal role in healthcare. Today a little girl cannot run a lemonade stand without a government permit.

Ask the people who lived in the USSR how wonderful public housing and government grocery stores were.
Is Mandani the harbinger of a centralized dictatorship or is he simply advocating for public resources that are already being spent to the Capitalist class in the form of grocery store subsidies and housing subsidies might be utilized more efficiently by the city once a profit motive has been eliminated?

Remember… this is money that is already being spent by the government for these things.. the difference is that a small group get to profit from those spent resources.
