Republicans Against Reality

Last week House Republicans voted for the 40th time to repeal Obamacare. Like the previous 39 votes, this action will have no effect whatsoever. But it was a stand-in for what Republicans really want to do: repeal reality, and the laws of arithmetic in particular. The sad truth is that the modern G.O.P. is lost in fantasy, unable to participate in actual governing.
<snip>
How did the G.O.P. get to this point? On budget issues, the proximate source of the party’s troubles lies in the decision to turn the formulation of fiscal policy over to a con man. Representative Paul Ryan, the chairman of the House Budget Committee, has always been a magic-asterisk kind of guy — someone who makes big claims about having a plan to slash deficits but refuses to spell out any of the all-important details. Back in 2011 the Congressional Budget Office, in evaluating one of Mr. Ryan’s plans, came close to open sarcasm; it described the extreme spending cuts Mr. Ryan was assuming, then remarked, tersely, “No proposals were specified that would generate that path.”

the Professor points out that while the GOP calls for drastic spending cuts, when it comes down to specifics, the party has problems.
The result is what we see now in the House: a party that, as I said, seems unable to participate in even the most basic processes of governing.

Obama care once implemented fully will be the ruin of this nation.
Job loss. Lost talent in the medical fields. Sounds like great plan.

Restraining the rate of growth is not a drastic cut. Again, they are not even "cutting",just trying to limit the rate of growth.

Oh I got it! When Romney does it, it's a God-send, when Obama does it it ruins the nation!

This is just hilarious. Time after time those folks who were for gay marriage hammered away, even after they were routinely refused by everyone from state and US congresses to the people themselves - and they never quit because they thought it was the right thing. Now here we have some of our representatives, who see the overturn of Obamacare as the right thing to do (as do their constituents, more and more each day) and you give them grief for sticking with it?

Need to stop focusing on the ACA. The present-day Republican Party is showing itself incapable of governing in all aspects, not just in their delusions about Obamacare but as Prof Krugman points out everytime actual spending cuts are demanded, they are unable to pass legislation.

When the cuts of the sequester began to elicit cries from their constituents, the GOP tried to shift the blame to the President.

Move on. Get over it. You've lost.

The analogy here isn't supporters of gay rights trying to remove legal impediments, it's homophobes voting to reinstate anti-gay laws when the rest of the nation has moved on. The GOP lost the health care debate. Just like they always lose on important progress they try to block.

Somehow that rings hollow coming from a dedicated republican hater. The worst thing the republican party can do for their chances at future success is to follow the prescriptions coming from their ardent opposition.

More hilarity. Both the republicans and the democrats lost the health care debate. Calling Obamacare "progress" is laughable in the extreme.

I don't remember when the House or Senate tried 40 times in one year to pass a bill allowing gay marriage. Maybe you can post a link to something that supports your implied claim

Or maybe you're just posting BS

Hey look, a turn of phrase rather than an argument.

ACA is progress. Not as much as I would like, but the forces of conservatism always try to block any real progress in their relentless desire to keep the US a backwater for the rich to enjoy themselves in.

Ultimately conservatives always lose: they lost on women's rights, they lost on ending Vietnam, integration, environmental protection, the right to unionize. And now they've lost in trying to keep the US in the 19th century as far as public health care.

I think this is why conservatives are so insecure and defensive, if not paranoid. They just keep losing.

Yep, clownboy just made that up. He'll say anything to rationalize the foolish conduct of the tea party occupation forces in the House.

So sayeth the losers who don't have to worry about paying for other people's misery.

Hey kids, this silly rightwing trope. Again.

When you get within walking distance of an argument on the merits against ACA, let us know. Meanwhile, the old day where for-profit insurance providers could exclude people who needed care, exclude 20 year old kids, exclude pregnant women, and prevent individuals from buying from collectives, is over.

The GOP can vote to repeal ACA 1,000 times, but, until they control the Senate and the White House, they are just wasting time.

Bull**** like this will not help the GOP win any elections because the American people see it for what it is and always will be.

"Better days are coming." ~ But not for today's out of touch, running out of time, GOP.
