As Bush's numbers have collapsed, many of his supporters have been saying that it does not matter when it comes to the fall elections. I have been saying otherwise. Today, the Republican-denied coattail effect has come into play, with the Republican party itself seeing its own poll numbers crash to the lowest level since Bush took office. I will once again reiterate that there will be an "I told you so" after this fall's elections, when the Democrats take back the House.
And why not? The coattails of the party leadership has always played a gigantic role in whether that party wins or loses, and it is no different here. If the Republicans are smart, they will see the aftermath of the elections as a chance to change. After all, the Democrats had to repudiate many of their Socialist policies and platforms in order to compete at the voting booth. Now its the Republican party's turn to repudiate its own Socialistic tendencies. They do this not at their own political peril.
