Republican Indoctrination: "What Jerry Falwell Jr. Taught Me at Liberty University"

Opinion | What Jerry Falwell Jr. Taught Me at Liberty University - The New York Times

You owe it to yourself to read that entire article from an ex-Liberty University student (who is now at Seminary). It starts...

"When I was a student at Liberty University, from 2012 to 2016, I had to take two semesters of a “Christian worldview” class. It consisted essentially of bullet-point lists of ethical issues, with quizzes to make sure we knew the right answers: How did we feel about abortion? What about gay marriage? We were required to take two Bible classes and two theology classes, which included plenty of information about sexual ethics and basic Christian beliefs about caring for the poor and marginalized.

Yet the more powerful education we received was through thrice-weekly “convocations” — gatherings that frequently featured Republican pundits and politicians. In place of what many Christian schools call “chapel,” all on-campus students were required to attend an hourlong meeting that included worship and a guest speaker. We sang songs about the power of the gospel, often followed by moving speeches about saving our country from socialists or protecting our borders from invading masses."

Fox News, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and Liberty University.

Most of Protestantism, especially in the South, is every bit as corrupt as the Catholic Church was during the reformation.

...and of course the stinking republicans had a different opinion when he used to admit he was 'pro-abortion', when he was donating to democrats kamala and biden etc. ad nauseam... quit fighting about the puppet$!... it is a truly stoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooopid waste of time!...

I do think Trump proves it's all about the D and R. The Democrats would love him if he had a D next to his name, the Republicans would hate him. Trump has changed his stances on the issues depending which party he belonged to at the time. Trump is all about Trump, not about any political party or any agenda. I don't think he has a personal ideology when it comes to politics. Trump isn't loyal to either party, only himself. It's a darn shame most Republicans can't recognize that. Trump is using the GOP and probably laughing all the way.

If he was a democrat, he'd be using that party also.

Re: Republican Indoctrination: "What Jerry Falwell Jr. Taught Me at Liberty University"

I'd like to know your personal experience with Christian or evangelical/fundamentalist schools.
Question: If you have any experience with them, did any of them ever share this?

Huh. Well, we homeschool, and our coop is pretty Evangelical, but not Fundamentalist. Plenty of folks around us who believe in a literal Genesis creation, but who also love Harry Potter and dancing, etc.

I went to government schools growing up, and remember seeing a news clip about this at some point in my college (mainline Protestant associated) curriculum, though I was older. I never witnessed such an experiment first hand. My wife went to a mainline private high school, and didn't.

Why do you ask?

Re: Republican Indoctrination: "What Jerry Falwell Jr. Taught Me at Liberty University"

Glad to see you're not a Cuckwell supporter.

Curious. Is not shaming and denouncing gay people an example of "Woke Sexuality"? Is that supposed to be a bad thing?

No - that would be rather the exact opposite of Woke Sexuality, which is more apt to do things like introduce kids to the Gender Unicorn, and blindly push regular adolescent sexual awkwardness into self-destructive expression.

Is a factual description of some of the darker periods of our history along with all the hagiographies and celebrations of our "exceptionalism" somehow examples of "anti-American history"? Or just more honest? Should we be honest with our students? How much honest history do home schooled students receive, do you think?

According to test scores, more than government school kids

Not least because you generally won't find historical BS like the 1619 Project there.

Does the concept of public education, where everyone has to coexist with everyone else, regardless of their social status, not have a certain appeal to a nation dedicated (supposedly) to the concepts of equal justice, equal opportunity, and equal worth?

Not much.

Firstly, our society begins by recognizing the worth, rights, and individuality of the individual. Communitarian structures designed to create and reinforce conformity were imported into American education from Prussian structures in the early 20th century.

Secondly, our system is built along the assumption that localities will be -and should be- different. Parents in San Fransisco (if there are any) don't want their children being taught curricula designed and approved by parents in Salt Lake City, and vice versa.

Thirdly, we already coexist. We call that Civil Society, and our growing inability to tolerate differences within it are tearing at our nation's foundations. Creating more conflict by threatening those San Fransiscan (or Utah) parents with the other will only exacerbate the tension, raise the stakes, and increase the bitterness of future fights.

Fourthly, our government generally sucks at this task, especially when it comes to educating the poorer off. We need to increase the ability of our poor to escape the systems that help trap them, not lock them more firmly in.

Just curious. We actually did that exact experiment in...I think it was either 4th or 5th grade class.
It was right at the time that she had launched this project so at least for us in the Montgomery County (Maryland) Public Schools it spread like wildfire...all the public schools did this experiment.

The friends I knew who went to private school never even knew about it.

Hey people, here is what I think all this stuff is. Religion is a man made institution and has NOTHING TO DO WITH GOD. It is a money making corporation like Exxon or Amazon.

Nah. We live in a world of negative partisanship. What's driving Evangelicals to get their kids out of public K-12 is the reinforcement of Woke Sexuality, anti-American history, and the like in that system, along with the often superior results of private or home school education.

Worth noting in the broader context - I loathe Jerry Falwell Jr, and have thought he was a scumbag who had scummed up Liberty for years.

What’s woke sexuality and anti American history? As far as sexuality goes, masturbation should be taught it’s a sin.

My friend recently leaned that dinosaurs and humans didn’t exist at the same time. She was raised Christian and went to the Creation Museum. She also doesn’t understand the actual theory of evolution. She has been learning a lot recently, but hasn’t stop believing in god.

Cool Story. :) That, a beanie, and a Che t-shirt will cause people to think you are a college sophomore. ;)

Woke Sexuality is the very edges of the Sexual Revolution. The current phase we are in is the Transgender/Queer-Theory/Intersectional stuff. No idea if Polyamory or Hebephilia/Pedophilia will be next.

Yup. Neither Old Earth nor Evolution are somehow mutually contradictory with Christianity.

Always. It's why I don't believe in organized religion.
It's mankind's way of screwing up everything spiritual and turning it into a sales pitch for a defective product.

Experienced just the opposite in ny. private schools were doing it. Public schools I guess because they were actually integrated didn't.

What anti American history is being taught in public schools?

as far as LGTB, what is the problem with just accepting them as socially equal deserving the same rights? Would Christians prefer they be jailed or sent to asylums?

it sounds like Old Earth Creationism does not accept evolution.

Homeschool vs Public School Test Scores and Statistics - 2008 to 2014.

The SAT 2014 test scores of college-bound homeschool students were higher than the national average of all college-bound seniors that same year. Some 13,549 homeschool seniors had the following mean scores: 567 in critical reading, 521 in mathematics, and 535 in writing (College Board, 2014a). The mean SAT scores for all college-bound seniors in 2014 were 497 in critical reading, 513 in mathematics, and 487 in writing (College Board, 2014b). The homeschool students’ SAT scores were 0.61 standard deviation higher in reading, 0.26 standard deviation higher in mathematics, and 0.42 standard deviation higher in writing than those of all college-bound seniors taking the SAT, and these are notably large differences…the test scores of homeschool students are higher than the national average for all students. As I expected, your source is a homeschooling website dedicated to servicing homeschooling. The link to the study goes to the same site, with a "page not found" error. So no points for you.

Which is why conservatives always support more funding for schools. Oh, wait...They aren't even supporting more funding for schools in the midst of the worst economic slowdown since the Great Depression. I'm so surprised.

Home schoolers have better success in college by every metric. They kick assx.

I'm not. New York spends amongst the highest amount of per-student dollars on education in the world, and it's results are abysmal. Washington DC is the same. You don't fix a broken system by making more broken system. It's like trying to fill a black hole by pushing more mass into it.

Ad Hominem, eh? How astonishing.

My 12 year old is learning to recognize logical fallacies as part of his home school curriculum this year. That was one of the first we covered :).

Guessing you - like me - never covered that stuff in government school, outside of perhaps debate class?

I wonder if the cost of living in New York and Washington, DC is higher than in, say, Mississippi? Would that have something to do with different cost-per-student comparisons? Just spitballing here...

Questioning the veracity of a source is an Ad Hominem attack? Didn't know that.

Potentially. But schoolbooks don't cost more just because housing does (though teachers might).

However, fortunately, we can look at the national level (to provide consistency), where we have also continued to increase per student expenditures for years, with no noticeable return in terms of improved performance, especially for our poor. Instead what we've gotten is flat test scores, a broken system that helps trap the poor in poverty, and a growing number of more highly paid administrative bodies.

Money isn't the solution to this problem - we've tried that.
