Republican Attorney General (South Dakota) kills man with his car. Tells police it was a deer.

so, those looters excuse the actions of your right wing chief of law enforcement for the state, who hit a pedestrian with his car and drove away, failing to render aid and comfort which may have been needed by the now

Back in the 80's, a high profile attorney in Hartford did the exact same thing--except it was a child in a bad section of town. He didn't call the cops until the next day, said he feared for his life to stop. He eventually admitted to cocaine addiction and alcoholism, lost his license to practice, etc. The reason he didn't stop was because he was loaded that night.

I hope something much worse legally happened to that schmuck.

That stinks to high heaven, and if he got a DEPUTY there and to loan his car? He had to have driven a ways at very least or that deputy is in on the cover up. Those deputies have ridiculous powerful flashlights and lights, yet the body was just off the shoulder in the grass? Probably the ONLY thing make this asshat go down is the public outrage and the family of the deceased, drawing North Dakota in to investgate this. Disgusting all around. I don't see any apparent way that deputy isn't trying to cover this guy's slimy ass.

Why do I keep jumping to conclusions? If the deputy was there after the accident that night to fill out the report and let him take his car home, Ravnsborg couldn't have been drunk, could he? And if he knew he was going to find a dead body, he wouldn't have taken a witness with him to look in the ditch.
Still seems pretty unbelievable that he didn't know what he hit, but maybe he didn't have his eyes on the road, either, for some reason.

Do you have to call the police if you hit a deer in South Dakota?

You usually need the police report for the car insurance to pay your claim and get the car fixed. I've hit 3 deer and had many more close calls. I always stop and take a photograph if I have hit something.

I also hit a clearly visible deer once. It was night and it just ran across in front of my car. I didn't call the police, though. It seems to me that he didn't know for sure what it was that he hit.

You must have been driving in a full moon and along a narrow tree lined two lane road. I hit one and flipped it completely over my car, never saw it until about 2 seconds prior to hitting it. Pitch black, no moon, thick forest on each side of the road and my headlights only lit up the road right in front, he stepped out of the dark and bang. So your story may be true but it's hardly the case in every instance. If you didn't call the police, what condition was your car in. Most of the time it tears up a car or anything less than a large PU truck with a deer guard on the front. My car was totaled even though it was drivable. The police escorted me to the edge of town where the road was lit up.

The one time I hit a deer my car was perfectly functional afterward. Shattered (but still functional) headlight and a divot in the hood that crimped downward and ripped out some deer fur, but nothing worse than that. Insurance covered the damage even though there was no police report. (The deer laid in the road for a few seconds, then bolted upright as I got out to inspect the damage and bounded off into a field, apparently little worse for the encounter.)

Also, isn't this at least the second high-ranking South Dakota state official to kill someone in their car in the last couple decades? Janklow-something? Former governor?

Bill Janklow, with his motorcycle. We got the same string of lies from that asshole as well.

Even so you were still able to tell it was a deer. This BS that he mistook a deer for a man just shows what a sleazeball this PoS is. If the autopsy show that the victim was still alive for even an hour I hope this PoS gets charged the max for whatever level of murder that additional indifference to his victim will bring.

Anybody who hits a human and says they thought it was a deer are full of ****. Anybody that defends that kind of thing is a piece of ****.

this is a very odd story.

Nah, I think he hit someone with his car who was on their motorcycle. And it wasn't the same string of lies, it was some stuff about a diabetic reaction.
