Report: Limbaugh & Hannity Being Dropped By Cumulus Media

(CBSMiami) – The nation’s second-biggest broadcaster plans to drop conservative firebrands Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity from all of its stations by the end of the year, according to Politico.com. Limbaugh’s show is based in South Florida.

Cumulus Media made the decision after talks broke down with Clear Channel’s Premiere Networks which distributes Limbaugh’s show. The once dominant Rush Limbaugh Show went through advertising issues in the last few years after he turned his fire on college student Sandra Fluke.

Cumulus declined to comment for this story: "Cumulus is not in a position to comment about negotiations with talent under contract, no matter what the rumor of the day might be," a spokesperson told POLITICO.

But in recent weeks, Cumulus has been quietly reaching out to radio talent agents and political insiders about new local and regional station hosts to fill some of the airtime that will be left vacant by Limbaugh and Hannity, industry sources said. Cumulus is also expected to move some of its existing talent -- which includes Mike Huckabee, Mark Levin, and Michael Savage -- into one of the slots..

The problem is, when you take the listenership of Thom Hartmann, Ed Schultz, Stephanie Miller, Alan Colmes and Al Sharpton combined, that's still only 12 million listeners per week, far short of 13 and 14 million + that Hannity and Limbaugh each draw.

Right. This isn't about Rush as much as it is about money.

Cumulus bought Citadel in 2011 and now has huge debt obligations it's paying off so it makes sense that it's trying to deleverage itself by swapping out massive contracts like Hannity and Limbaugh for the likes of Levin and Savage who won't cost nearly as much.

one of AZ clear channel station stated Rush and SH are moving to one of Clearchannel stations in South Florida. Clear Channel owns several talk radio stations in South Florida including Miami's 610 WIOD AM and West Palm Beach's Rush Radio 94.7 and 1290 WJNO.

I wonder if that's part of it. They may be deciding that they can't compete with Clear Channel in the same markets, so just letting it go may be their strategy.

Gee, sounds to me like the broadcaster is playing hardball in salary negotiations with these two more than anything else. Sounds like when all the cast was supposedly leaving Friends or when all the voices were leaving the Simpsons. I'll believe it when I see it happen - but if it gives you momentary pleasure, go for it.

I think it demonstrates that they aren't concerned about performance, since the entertainment industry (and the value of advertisements therein) is measured in viewership.

Take that with the announcement though that Clear Channel stations are picking him up. Maybe they can't compete on ad prices with Clear Channel, so if the ad revenue goes there...well they're not making money are they?

When I listened to Rush in the early 90's, he had 25 million listeners daily. And the number of listeners mean all most nothing unless you are talking about the 25-54 demo, this is what advertisers pay money for. On occasion I listen to him and I am surprised to hear PSA's broadcast instead of real advertising.

Conservative dominate the radio spectrum and cable as well, but with all that they don't have the White House

Here's the deal... I bet...

Cumulus wanted a discount... and my bet is Limbaugh wanted more because he figures after all the money he made for them, they need to pay for their disloyalty. Limbaugh hinted at DUMPING Cumulus after the Fluke/Fluck/slut ordeal.

Cumulus count for about 5% of his stations, and in those markets he will have others eager to benefit from his massive audience.

Wanna bet he makes more money in his new deal serving the same markets?

If I were a Cumulus stockholder... I'd be one pissed off camper. You don't let Babe Ruth go when he's making and made you huge chunks of cash. They're going to lose 6-hours of prime time radio dominance... idiots.
