Anthony Weiner: New York Congressman Tees Off on Republicans in Tirade on House Floor

(NEWSER) – Anthony Weiner's temper on the House floor has yielded another YouTube moment, this time as he lashed out at Republicans for blocking a measure to provide $7.4 billion in aid to 9/11 responders. As Sam Stein of the Huffington Post explains, the New York congressman was incensed that Republicans based their objections on procedural concerns and denounced them as "cowardly." Read more here for the details, or listen to Weiner himself in the video gallery.

More on the story:

"It was wrong for the overwhelming majority of Republicans to vote against the bill, and it was wrong for Democrats to bring the bill to the floor under rules that made passage so much more difficult," he said.
The Washington Post's Greg Sargent concurred, citing Democratic incompetence and Republican political chicanery as the principal reasons for the defeat. Sargent wrote that the Republicans are trying to "render government ineffective in order to deny Dems victories, create a sense that government is broken and has failed to deliver, stoke anti-incumbent fervor, and ensure that Dems bear the brunt of blame for government dysfunction." He adds, "Dems need to stop responding superficially to Republican opposition, and tailor their response to the GOP's underlying strategy."
Meanwhile, Weiner is still talking, going on Fox News Friday morning to blast his Republican colleagues in a debate with GOP Rep. Peter King (a sponsor of the bill, who harshly criticized Democrats' decision to go for a two-thirds majority).
"You know, this is not something that got rushed through, this is nine years in the making," Weiner said. "This is doing the right thing, and we should have passed this bill overwhelmingly without any controversy at all. But unfortunately, the party of 'no' hit a new low last night."
The bill's defeat now means that ill 9/11 rescue and recovery workers and their families will have to seek recourse through the U.S. court system for their medical expenses

....what a nice way of spitting on those who worked selflessly during 9/11.

WHy on earth didnt the dems with their majority pass the resolution? What did the dems do (or stuff into) to the legislation that made it so unpalatable? If this was 'just legislation to make it easier for 9/11 responders to get help then it has merit and probably should have been passed. But Im guessing NOTHING in congress is ever as black and white, cut and dried as these snippets make it appear. Didnt a republican co-sponser the bill?

Weener...what a class act. That kind of rant is effective in a bar...in congress it makes him look like an asshole on a tirade. Which...yeah...thats what it was...

Another shameful Republican episode on the floor of the House: they hid behind quibbling about passing the bill under suspension of the rules, which blocks amendments but likewise requires a two-thirds super majority to be successful. They voted against providing health care coverage for 911 first responders not because they were opposed to it, just the way it was being presented on the floor. Now, there's a profile in courage.

Since you posted here and you are specifically blaming Republicans, I'd ask you why didn't the DEM'S pass their OWN bill?

because they did not have the two-thirds vote of the senate to proceed

that was his point. the cowards of the GOP refused to vote against the bill because they found it a bad bill

"At the heart of the debate was a procedural maneuver made by Democrats to suspend the rules before consideration of the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act. The move allowed leadership to block potential GOP amendments to the measure (there was worry that Republicans would attach something overtly partisan in hopes that it could pass on the otherwise widely-popular measure). It also meant that the party needed a two-thirds majority vote." http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/07/29/anthony-weiner-911-bill-ballistic_n_664568.html

Their decision to suspend the rules and not allow some Republican input/amendments backfired. Too bad. So sad. Why would anyone blame the Republicans? Are we sure the "gentleman" isn't named Whiner?

What's in this bill?? Nobody's discussing its contents. Another one of those PC bills that cost taxpayers billions?

Wait! Wait! Wait! What about Obamacare?

At the end of the day, the question must be asked: Why didn't the Dems just bring the bill to the floor as a regular bill and pass it with a majority vote? Instead, they used a procedure that would require a 2/3 vote and inable them to block any Republican amendments.

Sounds to me as the Dems never wanted the bill to pass. They're using the first responders from the WTC as fodder to score political points. How sleezy is that?

Do some research. The democrats forced a 2/3 majority instead of an up or down vote.

Gotta go with you on this one. The "outrage" being professed by the Democrats is a bit comical....;)

No. I think his current name aptly describes his character as a man.

At the end of the day, 9-11 first responders are left without health care and Republicans are the ones who voted it down.

Funny...the article said Weener was mad at the DEMOCRATS for putting the vote under the 2/3 rule...

At the end of the day some idiots will lie and do anything to place blame on the other party.

Other than the headlines...do you even KNOW what is in this bill that you are advocating support for?

if the content of the bill was objectionable why would the GOP cowards not come out of hiding and vote against it because it was without merit?

How do you know they didn't?

So, IOW, you don't know what's in the bill?

And, others will just throw accusations without any evidence or any explanation. “You lie!” Wow. Impressive. … No, not really.

And all Republicans are liars, too, huh?

Really? How about a quote from that “article” supporting that claim. Include the part about Rep. Wiener calling the Republicans “cowards,” just for context's sake.

watch this and learn why the bill failed because of the absence of GOP support
the party of NO prevent assistance to the first responders of 9/11
too bad they are not multi national corporations, we could then count on the GOP to throw money in their direction

You still haven't answered the question as to whether, or not, you know what's in the bill.
