Rashida Tlaib, a Democratic representative-elect from Michigan, belongs to a cohort of incoming members of Congress who’ve vowed to upend the status quo — even on third-rail issues in Washington like the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. To that end, Tlaib is planning to lead a congressional delegation to the Israeli-occupied West Bank, she told The Intercept. Her planned trip is a swift rebuke of a decades-old tradition for newly elected members: a junket to Israel sponsored by the education arm of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, known as AIPAC, the powerful pro-Israel lobby group.

The AIPAC trips are among the lesser-known traditions for freshman members of Congress. They’re typically scheduled during the first August recess in every legislative session and feature a weeklong tour of Israel and meetings with leading Israeli figures in business, government, and the military. Both critics and proponents of the AIPAC freshmen trip say the endeavor is incredibly influential, providing House members with a distinctly pro-Israel viewpoint on complex controversies in the region. In recent years, the Democratic tour has been led by incoming Majority Leader Rep. Steny Hoyer, D-Md. Incoming Minority Leader Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., traditionally leads the Republican trip.

Over the last decade, AIPAC’s education arm, the American Israel Education Foundation, has spent $12.9 million on trips to Israel for 363 lawmakers and 657 congressional staff members. A typical House freshmen trip usually costs between $9,300 to $10,500 per participant, which covers all expenses, including a business-class flight and a stay at a luxury hotel in Jerusalem. Lawmakers who take the AIPAC trip have little time to hear from Palestinians and make no visits to Gaza, a coastal enclave facing a brutal embargo and Israeli military encirclement that is central to the conflict.

The pro-Israel lobby has a coming crisis on their hands, as many Jewish groups have been at the forefront of changing the demographics of the USA and Europe for several decades. Now the children of Palestinian & Somali iimmigrants are getting elected to Congress, as the children of Pakistani immigrants have been elected to Parliament in the UK. They are much less likely to be supportive of a monolithic Israel, and some like Tlaib support BDS.

The dream of the American Democratic party is to wrest political control from what they see as a white male dominated political system. But the typical white men and women in government have been much more receptive to AIPAC and the Israeli lobby than many ethnic minorities. Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio Cortez even referred to Israel as 'occupied territory' this past summer. She's noticeably toned down her speech concerning Israel, the reasons remaining to be seen.

Yes, good observation. Young western millennial congresswoman, who is more of an ignorant gaffe machine than almost any politician in recent history (except for trump, of course, who is completely off the grid on so many, many things), said something stupid based on a lack of understanding, which fits in nicely with anti Jewish views that Israel is not a legitimate country, making those who hold that view very happy with themselves. Fascinating CS on what “remains to be seen” though.

As for the UK, what world are you living in? Forget Pakistanis, the entire labour party is becoming an antisemetic cesspool. The days of Jews living freely and securely in the UK are coming to an end and most are now contemplating leaving. While that might please some people, it isn’t something to gloat about if you are a decent person.

Utter lies. I look forward to you presenting evidence that most UK Jews are contemplating leaving. I suspect I might be waiting for some time.

CJ 2.0:

Do you have any evidence to back up your claim that Jews living in the UK are feeling so insecure about their safety and freedom and that "most" British Jews are thus preparing to leave the UK?

Cheers.
Evilroddy.

It's just a news article describing one person's feeling, but Mandy Blumenthal stands for many.

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/women/life/no-longer-feel-safe-britain-anti-semitism-forcing-us-leave-home/

It also reflects the feeling of a sizeable number of Jews thruout Europe. Anti-semitic acts (all the way to violence) are on the rise over here in practically any country.

The thread is of course the habitual "da Jooz are out to get us all" fantasy that the OP is known for.

Well, it depends on what you mean. If by "most" one means a majority, then I do not know. However, more than a few are planning to leave due to increasing antisemitism, both from openly Jew-hating Muslims as well as the Britain's political left-wing which has long held Jews in contempt.

One can find the most "intriguing" of alliances these days, with neo-Nazis marching shoulder to shoulder with radical left and fundamentalist Muslims.

With all three normally destined to be at each others' throats, nothing unites more than a common enemy.

Lol. Sure buddy. I guess almost 40% is less than most, so you can pretend it’s not really a problem

Original point stands. The issue is far more severe than the original poster would ever recognize and has nothing to do with seeing through or addressing the various CTs that motivate the gloating that some anti-Jewish illiberal people are winning elected office on the radical left.

Some are indeed embarking on aliyah, because Israel incentivizes it to such a large degree. They're not leaving solely because of antisemitism in Europe, that idea is ludicrous. They're mostly moving to Israel because of the tax breaks, housing subsidies, and other goodies the Israeli government has waiting for them. They roll out the red carpet, sometimes literally, for foreign Jews who move to Israel.

There has been antisemitism in Europe as long as there have been Jews in Europe.

Only the degree of antisemitism changes.

England expelled Jews in the past. Then found their banking system eroded. Spain had their inquisition. So did Portugal and Italy. Germans just burned them. Time and again.

Read the OP; if AIPAC is willing to blow $10k per congress member or staffer to stay at luxury hotels in Jerusalem, how much more will they offer a new progressive congresswoman to tone down any sympathies she shares for Palestinians.

Israel is obsessed with growing it's population period. That's why they subsidize child birth, and frame childbirth for Jewish women as a patriotic service. The average childbirth rate is 3.4 for Israeli women.

Israel has been trying to lure worldwide Jewry for decades. When debating pro-Israel advocates over why Israel is so strict about immigration from the non-Jewish world, the #1 reply centers around the idea that Israel just doesn't have the needed geographical space for newcomers. This argument falls apart easily when you consider the Israeli government pays Jewish women to procreate, and offers land and housing subsidies to foreign Jews who agree to live on settlements.

The only subject where taking a black & white, good guys vs bad guys approach is not only recommended, but mandatory.

What percentage of Americans are Jewish and what percentage are Muslim? Less than 4%. There are national security reasons for the US to support Israel even though many Christian leaders support it.

We always hear about these supposed 'national security' reasons, yet that too is a canard. Islamic terrorism didn't exist in the US until fairly recently, with most terrorists citing the US' support for Israel as one reason for their actions.

As one minister put it, "I keep hearing that Israel is our strongest ally in the middle east, but before Israel was founded, we had no enemies in the middle east."

Israel has ample reason to ensure we have enemies in the mid east. Otherwise they'd lose support from those who think they're a national security asset.

If Rashida Tlaib chooses to lead a congressional delegation to the West Bank, in lieu of a trip to Israel, so what?

Is there something wrong with wanting to go to the West Bank?

There are those who choose to be part of a congressional delegation to Israel, in lieu of a trip to the West Bank, that's okay too. Right?

Much ado about nothing.

I bow to you in deep respect at the number of European Jews that you know, not to mention their motives.

You said most are now considering leaving. What you actually meant is that a minority would consider leaving in a hypothetical scenario which hasn't happened yet.

Disagreed. Like Britain was an unsinkable aircraft carrier from which to attack Nazi Germany, Israel, being the only democracy in the ME, is likewise an unsinkable aircraft carrier in a sea of Islamic despotism, tyranny and terrorist states. The only reason anyone gives a damn about the Arab states is because many are sitting on top of 56% of the world’s oil. The US doesn’t need it, but our trading partners do hence why the US has a vested interest in the region.

The Left wing activists that are the bulk of the pro Palestinian solidarity mass are part of it because they see the conflict as displaying an anti Arab racism. And , to be honest , that is the truth about it. If you wish to translate that as " contempt for Jews " that's your choice but imo you are wrong

Well, here is the problem with that innocent interpretation: Jews have long been held in contempt by large sections the traditional socialist left because of the antisemitic conspiracy theory that the Jews were and still are pulling the strings of international finance meant to keep the working poor in perpetual slavery. That the Jews are additionally seen as the oppressors of the Palestinians by the left is only the icing on the cake to many. To ask that I or anyone else ignore that is folly.

Of course they do.

Radical left has never been that smart.

To the radical right the Jews started and directed global communism. To the radical left the Jews are behind capitalism and manipulate the system to their advantage.

But sure, it's about the noble interest in being anti racism against Arabs that causes the women's march folks to be radically antisemetic.

Oh wait, no it isn't...

Anti-racism indeed:

At the end of January, according to multiple sources, there was an official debriefing at Mallory’s apartment. In attendance were Mallory, Evvie Harmon, Breanne Butler, Vanessa Wruble, Cassady Fendlay, Carmen Perez and Linda Sarsour. They should have been basking in the afterglow of their massive success, but—according to Harmon—the air was thick with conflict. “We sat in that room for hours,” Harmon told Tablet recently. “Tamika told us that the problem was that there were five white women in the room and only three women of color, and that she didn’t trust white women. Especially white women from the South. At that point, I kind of tuned out because I was so used to hearing this type of talk from Tamika. But then I noticed the energy in the room changed. I suddenly realized that Tamika and Carmen were facing Vanessa, who was sitting on a couch, and berating her—but it wasn’t about her being white. It was about her being Jewish. ‘Your people this, your people that.’ I was raised in the South and the language that was used is language that I’m very used to hearing in rural South Carolina. Just instead of against black people, against Jewish people. They even said to her ‘your people hold all the wealth.’ You could hear a pin drop. It was awful.”
