Most Agree With Trump On Need for ‘Patriotic Education’ - Rasmussen Reports(R)

Voters feel better about America’s public schools these days, but most agree with President Trump that we need to restore patriotic education to the curriculum.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey finds that 57% of Likely U.S. Voters agree with this statement by the president earlier this week: “The only path to unity is to rebuild shared national identity focused on common American values and virtues of which we have plenty. This includes restoring patriotic education in our nation’s schools, where they are trying to change everything that we have learned.” Thirty percent (30%) disagree, while 14% are undecided. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

Seventy-eight percent (78%) of Republicans see a need to restore patriotic education, compared to just 43% of Democrats and 49% of voters not affiliated with either major party.

We really should spend more time on teaching the value of being American. Naturalized citizens usually know more about America than natural citizens. The “United we stand, divided we fall” is more important than ever. We are on the path to an election where it is possible that neither side will honorably accept the outcome, and that is a very bad thing because it facilitates “social interference” from hostile countries.

But in the meantime as this rift heals over time, the new crop of citizens coming up may decide that America is worth keeping around in one piece.

Would that not be patriotic indoctrination?

Force children to love the country through “education “ and not allow them to use critical thinking to determine if the country deserves support

Next thing is “Trump Youth?”

in other news, Tweety is at 942.73% approval!

hooray for Rasmussen!

i'd definitely advise not joining. the last time around, they ended up on the front lines.

Yeah, but that was at the end........

It is a classic fascist idea.

But yes when you move away from a critical thinking higher education system, then it is easier for someone to control the population. That's why Conservatives have for decades gone on and on about Liberal colleges and what not. Before they use to own what was taught at colleges and determine who was allowed in...now they can't so it must be socialist or something.

Saying that, learning a realistic view of your nation and history in school is not a bad thing...not many nations do that sadly.

If you ever needed proof of how messed up Rasmussen's methodology is these days, this poll just confirms it.

Anyone with a statistics background see any problems with the question:

“The only path to unity is to rebuild shared national identity focused on common American values and virtues of which we have plenty. This includes restoring patriotic education in our nation’s schools, where they are trying to change everything that we have learned.”

Why don't we teach the truth and teach about the genocide of indigenous peoples? Or what about the Tulsa race riots? Omaha race riot?

Yes Trump would like us to be like N. Korea where the children are taught that Kim invented the school desk so that children may learn. I was taught the "Lost Cause" fallacy and the myth of the "kindly" General Lee like most of my generation. Is that the kind of BS you want children to learn again?

Because, that would remove the white washing of history

The problem is we're all left to decide for ourselves what 'teaching the value of being American' represents. For example, I know in school I was taught a false narrative about the Civil War - the Lost Cause version. To understand the value of being American requires, as I see it, an honest accounting of where and how we have failed, and what we did although imperfectly and belatedly, to address those failings. It does no one any good to pretend, but does great good to recognize our failures and how we've addressed them. It's that latter that matters, and it's important. It's also important to understand our past to understand our present, and problems that still persist.

So what would this new curriculum look like? Who knows!? The UDC would craft an entirely different lesson plan than most historians, so what would be taught in our schools?

And the poll question is seriously flawed in other ways:

"This includes restoring patriotic education in our nation’s schools, where they are trying to change everything that we have learned.”

Besides the non-existent definition of "patriotic education," who is trying to change "everything" that we have learned? And what did we learn that's true that these unknown people are trying to change. And are "they" (who?) really trying to change "everything" that "we" have learned in "schools?" I doubt it, so what exactly did "we" learn that is not being taught to the kids these days, and should be? Who knows?

Bottom line is this is a question that demands we project all kinds of unknowns, then a small majority supports presumably ALL schools teach some version of American history with which we agree or would like advanced.
