A Michigan lawmaker is set to be sworn into office as a US congresswoman while holding a copy of a Koran once owned by former US President Thomas Jefferson.

Rashida Tlaib, who is of Palestinian heritage, is also expected to wear traditional Palestinian clothing during the swearing in ceremony.

This should rock the anti-Muslim conservative faction in the House. Can't wait for The Donald's Tweets concerning her & the ceremony.

Why is she a good representative, in your estimation, JacksinPA?

I'm not that familiar with her or her positions. But being a 'democratic socialist' sounds attractive to me after posting about the benefits of that type of political system in Uruguay: cradle-to-grave free health care & free education through college. Both programs would make this a better country.

the citizens she will represent selected her at the ballot box

that was too easy; what did i miss?

He also edit the living dogsnot out of the Bible to make his own version. Basically removed all the references to miracles and focused primarily on Jesus' teachings instead.

after the brits burned the first one (1814) Jefferson sold his extensive library to resume the library of congress

Allow me a word of practical experience here. I served as Chief of Staff for a member of the Michigan House in the years 2011,2012 and 2013. The office I worked in was very close to that of another Michigan House member - now US Rep Tlaib. I can tell you one thing about her that is the single most clear memory I have of her: she was the hardest working member of the legislature that I saw during my three years up there. She put in longer hours than most and did so with a much smaller Lansing staff than most other members as she wanted to also have a staff member back home in Detroit at an office for constitution services. She was the only one I know of who did that.

I grew to know her and liked and respected her. And a selfish part of me was thankful I did not work in her office as she worked her people to the ground demanding that they serve the people above all else.

She won this new job for one main reason: she outworked everybody else who wanted it. And I have no doubts that she will continue to outwork everyone in Washington. She is going to do very very well there.

I'm no fan of Islam or any other dogma business. However, I do enjoy it when the Christian dominionists in our government must come to grips with American diversity.
