Just because we hate our poor doesn't mean we are racist!
Despite the fact that we have spent trillions of tax and charitable dollars in the failed effort to eradicate poverty, it exists because it is a lifestyle enjoyed by millions who refuse to give it up.
Yes, there are exceptions; the aged, the disabled. However, these represent only a small fraction of the group collectively known as "our poor". The mass of "our poor" are content with their lot in life. Were this not the case, they would take advantage of the myriad opportunities to improve their circumstances.
If they were hated, they would be left to fend for themselves instead of being treated to a standard of living which is the envy of the middle class in many nations.
Because we are embarrassed by their presence.
We are not embarrassed. We understand and accept that people cannot be forced to do something they do not wish to do.
Because we are too cheap to pay the taxes to support our schools and our teachers so we can have less poor.
The national per capita average spent on K-12 kids is in excess of $10,000. This is more than the tuition at many, many colleges.
The problem is not money. The problem is differing levels of respect for education, of motivation, and of ambition.. Slums and segregated schools have produced outstanding leaders; the finest schools have produced failures. However, since it's not politically correct to point to personal deficiencies, the complaint is always about money. That's simply a cop out.
If a person wants to learn, nothing can prevent it. It a person doesn't want to learn, nothing will make it happen.
Because we would rather have cheap products made overseas and sold in Walmart rather than have enough jobs here in this country to reduce the number of unemployed so we can have less poor.
WalMart and many other employers which can offer jobs to millions of unskilled, uneducated, unmotivated, unambitious persons should be praised rather than denigrated. Where else can these folks work? The smartest among them, realizing that education is the only way up the economic ladder, don't moan and complain. They enroll in the evening programs offered by community colleges to gain the knowledge they need to get them into better opportunities for more money and opportunity.
In the meantime, at least they have a paycheck and a vision of a better life.
As long as the damn poor stay in their shanties out of sight, we feel good about ourselves. But these hurricanes have flushed them out like so many cockroaches, and we can't just call an exterminator like we would if they really were just bugs. This is a wake up call, people. Pay the poor to abort their babies! Give the poor men a bag of dope if he will accept a free vasectomy! Give the poor women a free makeover if they will have their tubes tied! Rich people unite! The poor are coming! The poor are coming!
(where is the Paul Revere smilie?)
From all I've read, there is some confusion. It is you who hates "our poor".
Damn, I am eloquent for this early in the morning.....
Not eloquent; ludicrous, and all its synonyms..
