What about black youngsters who hit the books and study after school instead of hitting the streets? Sometimes they are ridiculed as being incog-negro or acting white and the ridicule is often accompanied with life-threatening physical violence. Many blacks, particularly black males, have arrived at the devastating conclusion that academic excellence is a betrayal of their black identity.

Once again Williams hits the nail on the head. I heard and continue to hear my share of insults (spic, taco ni%%er, affirmative action, communist, terrorist, illegal) My father always said that education is the most important thing in a mans life. People can take away everything you have but they cannot take away your education.

Some people ridicule other people. Poor students call good ones nerds or geeks. Marginal employees call good ones brown-nosers. Just two I can think of off the top of my head. The "acting white" insult is just another example of this phenom.

I disagree with this. Good students don't ridicule good students. Good employees don't ridicule good employees. I think this conclusion is way too complicated. They're just jerks.
