I just got my licensed renewed and got one of those temporary paper licences until they send me my new one. I was wondering if you can buy alcohol with one of these or will they tell you to **** off? Because my birthday is a week from now and it would really suck if you couldn't.

IDK, but wouldn't you have your old license with your photo to show them too since it is a renewal?

Darn good question. I didn't know any state was still doing the paper temporaries.

Regrettably I have no idea. If it is legal ID issued by the state I would think they'd have to accept it.

Might be best to test this by trying at a place where they know you first.

This is the way it works here - you keep your old license and have a temporary license until the new one arrives - if the police accept the combination, why wouldn't a liquor store - but then, we're Ontario, Canada where the government runs the liquor stores too, so it may be different there.

Do they really ask every time? In Britain the legal drinking age is 18, but you're only ever asked if you look obviously younger than that, and often not then! I was a pub regular from 16, but then I was six feet tall, and the kind of pubs I frequented didn't care as long as you paid!

If I were serving you, I probably wouldn't take it. If you turned out to be a minor, I'd be held liable for not asking for a photo ID. At least, that's what I remember from the TABC certification I had to get for waiting tables & bartending.

The DMV took it.

Strange. Our DMV let me keep mine the last time I did in-person renewal. I haven't long since renewed online so the next time I get my license renewed in person the picture will be a wee bit dated.

I think the standard requirement is a photo ID not just a paper one. When I was stationed at Ft. Benning GA. that's what was required off post...but it can't hurt to go try it out and see.

Nope I got to keep mine. When you have to do in-person, you have to renew by a certain date prior to your actual expiration though to allow time for the new photo-ID to be mailed from the processing center. I think I had to renew by the 15th even though the license did not expire until the end of the month. Not sure what would have happened if I had been after the 15th but before the 31st. With my license plates, I just print out something that is a temporary registration until they mail me the new one with the stickers on it. If the police ran my plates, it would show me renewed and I wouldn't be ticketed even if the physical plates did not have the sticker yet.

Looks like they should accept it in Georgia if it has a physical description of you and your date of birth.

APIS - State Profiles of Underage Drinking Laws

In Georgia, the prohibition against furnishing to a minor does not apply when a retailer has been provided with “proper identification,” defined as “any document issued by a governmental agency containing a description of the person, such person's photograph, or both, and giving such person's date of birth.” When a reasonable or prudent person could reasonably be in doubt as to whether a customer is of legal drinking age, the retailer has a duty to request to see and to be furnished with proper identification in order to verify the customer’s age, and the failure to make such request and verification in the case of an underage person may be considered by the trier of fact in determining whether the retailer furnishing the alcoholic beverage did so knowingly. See Ga. Code Ann. § 3-3-23(d), (h). APIS has interpreted the “reasonable or prudent person” requirement as providing the retailer a defense for reasonable reliance on an apparently valid ID.

I think Georgia is one of those card everybody even if they are 90 states so I am pretty sure she will be denied unless she has a military ID or passport.

i still get carded in my 30s. they ask every single time because they have to card anyone who looks under forty in most states.

If it is standard practice in your state, and you shop in your state, you should have less awkward stares. Don't be surprised if it does happen though. Businesses would be put in a difficult spot trying to figure out what is what. Try to carry additional identification if possible.

It pisses me off, frankly. Since the boom hit, when I am working at the liquor store to subsidize my education, I pretty much have to put up with out-of-staters being without normal IDs. Selling to a minor with bad ID when I am still working toward being an educator or a College professor. Not always the most fun thought running through my head.:doh

Well she says it's a state issued temporary ID with a photo...if it's laminated then it might work. If it's just a picture stapled to a piece of paper then maybe not. In that case I think you'd be right. At least some valid form of photo ID to go with it in case they want verification.

happy early birthday!

It has my photo on it.

In that case, you should be just fine. Might get turned down a few times, but you're legal. Ask for the manager or go to a different establishment.

Thanks, it has my photo on it, and my height, and eye color, and stuff. It looks like a regular license, just on paper.

Hopefully it shouldn't give me any problems.

How is the photo attached? If it can come loose you might want to supplement it with some other photo id showing your age...or carry your birth certificate to show with it. :)

The photo is on the license, it's not attached or anything.

If you mean it is part of the license then it should be fine, especially if it is a standard issue in your state. Businesses should see enough of them to know if it's real or not.

Good afternoon, Your Star. :2wave:

Here in NE Ohio, everything happens the same day. They test your eyesight and hearing, then they sit you down and take your picture. (Passport photos have a reputation for making you look bad, but they have nothing on the DMV, IMO!) :lamo: Then you wait until they laminate your new license, then you're out of there, and good for five years!

Congratulations on your upcoming birthday...I also have mine next week! We both had the good sense to be born in one of nature's most beautiful months!

They did all that, tested my eyes and took a new picture(which I hate ) but they gave me this paper license. It will be about a month before they mail me a new one. Hopefully they'll take it, I really don't see why not, it looks exactly like a license except on paper.

It would royally suck to go out on my birthday and end up being the designated driver.

And happy birthday to you as well!

Any photo ID with DOB will do. He'll, a Costco membership card combined with your birth Cert will work. Or just do what the kids do...have a friend but it for you.
