Putin's NYT Op-Ed came under fire by elected officials, including the White House as well as the media. However, few highlight the tremendous advance this document represents. In this document Putin endorses a Christian moral standard and rule of law. Never-mind Putin has never adhered to either. This public pronouncement may be used in the future to hold Putin to account.

The White House should draw Putin into backing up and expounding these western principles, not by criticizing, but rather by gently taunting and cajoling Putin to defend his Op-Ed. This incredible opportunity should not be wasted on petty bickering. The more Putin defends Christian values, democratic principles and the rule of law, the better for us and for the world.

Putin made only one substantive point, that there was no legal basis for attacking Syria. Judge Napolitano makes the same point, but both miss the fact that Syria's failure to sign the Chemical Weapons Ban Treaty places Syria outside the protection of law. When every civilized country in the world but a handful sign a (all signatories treated equally) non-aggression treaty like CWBT, non-signatories place themselves in a category of increased scrutiny and potential peril. Putin and Napolitano should be corrected on this point, it is a significant moral high-ground issue and needs to be addressed.

American exceptionalism is puffery and self-promotion and the government should stop using the term. Especially Democrats who continuously strive to convert America into a French-European style country. Adopt Teddy Roosevelt's "talk softly and carry a big stick." To the rest of the world "American exceptionalism" is nothing more than bragging and nobody likes a braggart. Used internally as reason America should show courage, independence or individual liberty, it might be fine. The term "American exceptionalism" should never be used to lecture the world, though.

Putin is a liar for his own benefit, and this was nothing but a bold faced slap to President Obama and our government as a whole.

Surely we don't need to start posting links to all the anti-gay, or opposition oppression that Putin and his government are engaged in. Him lecturing the US and our President is like Iran's Supreme Leader and Religious Leader Ali Khamenei lecturing Pope Francis on love for your fellow man.

Lotta nerve, that Putin.

So what if "Putin is a liar for his own benefit?" Does it mean we shouldn't act in our own best interest? Our best interest is served getting Putin on the record in as complete and self-incrimanitory fashion possible. The point of the OP is that the government and pundits are indulging in exactly the sentiment Beaudreaux exhibits, when they should be forwarding America's best interest.

Why bicker with Putin? It's obvious Putin wants to engage in a moral-high ground public debate. Feed him enough rope to hang himself. We'll be glad he's on the record later when he starts acting up again.

All the Soviets like KGB agent PUTIN have ever understood is strength.
They still view us as a Paper Tiger.
It is high time we fight his fire with everything we have to keep the Peace and make this a better World.
PUTIN destabilizes the World by supporting Terrorist Nations. got Soviet S-300s??

I hate to say it, but you're damn right on this one.

The US has lost it's prestige as an influential power in the world (speak softly but carry a big stick), and we are no longer taken seriously, because even though we have a big stick, we are scared as hell to carry it, much less use it. Countries around the world are running all over us, because they know there will be no consequences, what so ever.

Heya Beaudreaux.....yeah Putin is getting a bit to cocky. Trying to rub our faces in it.....wont be a saving grace in the long term. Not to mention.....he keeps it up. He will end up causing both wings of that Bird to rise up. Which it then it wont be Eagle Scout like. More like the Phoenix rises from its Ashes.

U.S. lawmakers unite in fury over Putin's op-ed in New York Times.....

It’s not every day that an opinion piece in The New York Times simultaneously insults the Republican speaker of the House and nearly causes the top Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to "vomit."

Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain called Putin's piece an “insult to the intelligence of every American.”

Lawmakers on Capitol Hill seemed willing to give the White House time, but they remain hesitant to believe that Russia and Syria will work with the United States in good faith.....snip~

The problem with your proposal, is that Putin doesn't give a flying f*** what anyone thinks about him, or if they catch him going against his own words later. He's going to do what's in his best interest only, regardless of the consequences to anyone else, including his own country in the eyes of the world. He's proven that time and again.

The current US Administration is the exact opposite, in that they are more concerned in what others think, regardless if how it adversely effects this country, or our people, or our allies. And we and they and Putin know it.

Can you imagine English speaking people around the World hearing Ted Cruz today? And I quote," This Country needs 100 Jesse helms in the Senate". I know you don't like me being too political, but Dems need to include him in every political ad they run for 2014. And Ron Paul yesterday is beyond the pale.

Yes its now.....Walk softly and give Pin Pricks. Course Team Obama says they are surgical likes.

Do you think this means Pinch Poke.....then we tell "em" they owe us a Coke.

How Ted Cruz made it to the US Senate is beyond me. Compared to Ted Cruz, Jesse Helms was a Communist.

Can you Imagine the Confusion of 1 Billion Chinese and 1 Billion Eastern Indians that all got to hear Putin in their Own languages......and then discovered that the Liberal News Source that allowed Putin to Write an OP for the US.....and About Obama.....and the US. Was The NY Times.

Do you think Salon, the Washington Post, and the Rest of the MS Media, would have allowed Putin to do this? For money? What about the fallback position for Ratings?

Putin stole Obama's popularity.

I see you've become BFF with your new boy PUTIN.

This only happen because of one reason.....the right-wing in America(i.e. TEA PURTY, Libertarian, Republican...whatever label)
Putin..like Assad...are plugged into the local politics ...and they have been hearing nothing but cheers from the right wing!!

Even our allies Like Netanyahu...come to America and act like he...not Obama ...is the American the president.

So why shouldn't Putin feel embolden to lecture ...YOU PEOPLE (the rightwing) about democracy!

I have had several posts in this forum now about the embracing of Putin by the right wing ....all the way back to the Ed Snowden fiasco.....and you people are surprised at this. The right wing look to Putin ....as being more American than Obama.
There may be few of you people who are not birth-ers ....but even if you think he's born American ...you are all led to see him as some evil Muslim!!

Why does this surprise anybody. One can only wonder what the talk would be if democrats ...in mass were embracing the Russians.

I see you've become BFF with your new boy PUTIN.

Sun Tzu.....know thy enemies well.

But that doesn't help you and all those of Liberaldumb trying to get round that Liberal New Source that ALLOWED Putin to Diss this Country. Now try and deal with that, in that smoking pipe of yours.

What's funny is how American rightwingers like Boehner get all bent out of shape by rather banal and mostly true comments from a foreign leader who has his own constituency at home to cater to. It makes the US look stupid and insecure when the Speaker of the House feels compelled to respond to some vapid comments by a foreign leader, as if the fate of the free world and the stability of the nation were dependent on responding.

Jesus, conservatives are dumb. And even Democrats get all weirded out by stuff like this. Makes us look like a banana republic run by banana Republicans.

...aaawshad-up. Putin and Assad could stand on the corpse of the families they're butchering and you people would believe their story over Obama.

Despite your hate for Obama ...I really thought you people were at least patriotic.

You guys better not call any American ...a communist or socialist anymore ...because that would really be funny!!

“I was at dinner,” New Jersey Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez said on CNN after he read the piece. “And I almost wanted to vomit.”.....snip~

Well, at least they don't get so bent out of shape as those Democrats that just can't keep what they shoevelin.....down!

Yep like I said, even some Democrats get weirded out. They should stop acting like Republicans and think.

Russia has legitimate interests in the region, and not only that, there's very little it can do to protect them except block UN votes and write Op-ed pieces. So to get all bent out of shape like xenophobic tea party types do because Putin hurt their patriotic feelings, is rather stupid.

That has nothing to do with the Putin op-ed. I'd also say that considering Obama's sordid family I'd probably not want to go there.

You wont hear me complain about that now. They should stop acting like Republicans and actually think.....rather than acting oh so touch feely and emotional like all liberals and progressives do. Maybe they should quit looking at pictures when reading the reports.

Democrats Face Syria Strike Divide

President Barack Obama's pursuit of a military strike in Syria has put congressional Democrats and party leaders around the country in a tough spot.

Breaking from Democrats' long history of being the party typically opposed to military conflict, Obama is pushing for a limited military strike in Syria in response to President Bashar Assad's alleged use of chemical weapons. House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid have rallied behind him.

But some liberal and moderate Democrats, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan fresh in their minds, have begun joining dozens of conservative Republicans registering their opposition. And many rank-and-file Democrats are undecided on whether to support a congressional resolution for military action, questioning whether it would turn the tide in a bloody civil war, whether it's in the U.S. national interest and whether it would prompt Assad to retaliate with more chemical weapons.

In the Senate, Democrats Chris Murphy of Connecticut and Tom Udall of New Mexico opposed the resolution to authorize a strike when it was up for a committee vote while recently elected Massachusetts Sen. Ed Markey, who succeeded Secretary of State John Kerry, voted present. West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin, one of the party's most moderate members, said he would oppose the resolution. More than a dozen Democratic senators are supporting it.

Liberal activists are planning candlelight vigils across the country on Monday night to urge members of Congress to oppose the resolution, and they suggest those who support military action risk political punishment in the future.

"Everyone who positions themselves as a progressive needs to think very hard about what their vote will mean down the road," said Anna Galland, executive director of MoveOn.org.

At the same time, a large delegation of members representing the influential American Israel Public Affairs Committee, the pro-Israel lobbying group with strong ties to congressional Democrats, plans to press lawmakers on Capitol Hill next week to approve the resolution.....snip~
