He's right, of course. We live in a global economy where sustaining sanctions against a player as big as Russia will mean a lot of sacrifice and suffering around the globe - including here at home. It is only through the absolute resolve of western nations that Russia can be made to pay the price for Putin's folly, and Russian military forces completely driven out of Ukraine's borders. And because of the ignorance and selfishness of the average American, I'm not optimistic about success in that mission.

That’s what Putin expected. He ran the Nazi play almost exactly. Expecting that NATO would dither, and that the US would be so politically divided that it was unable or unwilling to lead.

That certainly would have been the case had trump survived.

He wanted the US and NATO to cave in to his demands. He expected it.

Now, Putin is hoping that he can secure all the land east of the Deniper River, and declare victory, or try and force the negotiated give away of Ukrainian land that he though he was going to get in the first place.
