So apparently Putin is not satisfied that the US is no longer planning to attack Syria.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday called any possible foreign military intervention against Syria a form of "aggression" that would rattle the entire region and contravene international law.

Putin told a summit of an ex-Soviet security group that he was grateful for its decision to support Moscow's refusal to sanction strikes against President Bashar al-Assad's regime for its alleged use of chemical weapons.

"The members of the Collective Security Treaty Organisation (CSTO) are united in their view that the situation around Syria can only be resolved through political means," ITAR-TASS quoted Putin as saying at a meeting in the southern Russian port city of Sochi.

"Any outside use of force would be a grave violation of international law, which in the language of the UN Charter is referred to as 'aggression,'" Putin said.

Technically he is correct. Yes, the US probably has the power to overlook the admonishment of the international community and go it alone, but the laws should apply to everyone. Of course, if the UN decided to do something by international decision he would be wrong, but right now he is correct despite being putin. Obama stepped out of line, and that gives putin the high ground to say things like this even though we may not like them telling us about laws we helped establish and are supposed to follow.

I am not sure why everyone makes such a big deal of this when we love to toss things like this in russia's face whenever they do stupid stuff. It is bluster and it means nothing in the grand scheme of things.

Could you list some of these 'international community laws'? When did we agree to abide by them?

Citation?

I am pretty sure it is common knowledge the US participated in the establishment of the UN and has committed to acting within the boundaries of that organization internationally. Did i miss something and the US is no longer a part of the UN?

You're inventing international law to claim that a nation cannot act unilaterally.

Oh good god, start here and join the conversation on a level that is not intentionally obtuse and avoiding the discussion.

Am i the world's social studies teacher now? This is some basic stuff here people. We are not talking about Miley Cyrus here, this is politics and if you do not know what the UN and international law is about, and how the US's position in the world made it a large and important part of establishing it you might want to tackle a different subject.

No, but we cannot commit acts of war in agreement with those laws against a soveriegn foreign nation. Which is what bombing them would be. Do not confuse ignoring the law and lack of punishment with actually complying with the law.

Nonsense. Cite the international law.

Right, and he's already stated that it would require a UN resolution to conform to IL.

When we joined the UN and when we went to the security council two or three times in the last couple years seeking permission and were denied.

Heya Monte. :2wave: That aint all he is doing.....going to be bit hard to strike Syria now.

Russia ready to send observers to Syria
Associated Press – Sun, Sep 22, 2013

Russia is ready to send military observers to Syria to ensure security for efforts to eliminate its chemical weapons, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said.

But the Russian official said his country is not considering sending a full military contingent.

In an interview broadcast Sunday on state TV's Channel One, Lavrov said Russia has proposed that there be an international presence on the perimeter of all areas where chemical weapons experts will work in Syria. "We are ready to share our servicemen and military police to participate in these forces," but "it seems to me that military observers will be sufficient," he said.

Although Russia and the U.S. worked together on the chemical weapons plan, Washington and Moscow remain at odds over several aspects of the Syrian crisis. The United States, along with France, have sought a U.N. Security Council resolution that would authorize the use of force, if Syria reneges on the chemical weapons agreement, but Russia opposes invoking the U.N. Charter's Chapter 7 which would allow force.

Lavrov criticized what he called "impudent" attempts by the West to include that chapter in the resolution.....snip~

Also proposing that others put their skin in the game and troops on the ground around chems. how do you think this affcts things going forward now?

Hi MMC. Good, I hadn't seen that. That would make a US strike about impossible. It's also risky for his troops moving around all those terrorists the US is supporting.

So the US went to the UN and asked for a resolution (permission slip) for no fly zone/use of force and was denied not once, but twice!

Yeah, and I think Russia was given a response from the Rebels.....so now Rebel/Terrorists can take their chances fighting the Russians. If the Russians are the only ones in there and the Rebels attack them. I don't think the Russians will wait for talks with us or any others.

Syria: Mortar round lands in Russian Embassy

A mortar round landed in the Russian Embassy compound in Damascus on Sunday, Syria's state news agency said. There was no immediate report of casualties.

Quoting an unidentified "source" at the embassy, SANA said "business is usual" at the diplomatic mission following the mid-afternoon attack.

An activist group, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, confirmed that the round exploded inside the embassy compound. It said it could not immediately verify if there were any casualties.

Not just state media or a tabloid, but a state tabloid. haha

Well here is how Reuters is spinning it. Which know all are starting to learn just how the FSA and the SNC just don't have control over anything. Which means they cannot keep any promises about keeping Weapons out of any others hands.

Russia says West exploiting Syria deal to threaten force

Russia accused the West on Sunday of trying to exploit a chemical weapons deal with Syria to push through a U.N. resolution threatening force against President Bashar al-Assad.

The United States, France and Britain want a council resolution issued under Chapter 7 of the U.N. charter, which could authorize sanctions or military intervention if Damascus reneges on its commitments.

"They see in the U.S.-Russian deal not a chance to save the planet from significant quantities of chemical weapons in Syria, but as a chance to do what Russia and China will not allow, namely to push through a resolution involving (the threat of) force against the regime and shielding the opposition," Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.

A letter seen by Reuters on Sunday from the head of the Syrian Coalition, Ahmad Jarba, to the U.N. Security Council revealed he had committed his group for the first time to attend a proposed Geneva peace conference - on condition that it aimed to establish a transitional government with full powers.

The coalition had resisted pressure to go to Geneva, especially after the August 21 chemical weapons attack.

Jarba's comments mean that both Assad's government and the main political opposition have agreed in principle to attend the peace talks. However their conditions for participation still appear far from reconcilable.
Jarba's coalition also has very limited influence over the fighters inside Syria, particularly the increasingly powerful Islamist brigades and al Qaeda-linked groups.....snip~

Russia says West exploiting Syria deal to threaten force

Why are we talking with the FSA and SNC when they have limited influence over the Rebels/Terrorists.....again? Funny how they want to say they will show up for peace talks huh? Whats so pathetic is these nut jubs want others all from around the world to say they are the ruling Authority in Syria. They actually believe that are other should just make them the rulers. Of course just to get things going in a New Syria.....Right?

Why does the actor that said.....Earn it......comes to mind.
