“Putin reserved special ire for Russian oligarchs, many of whom are Kremlin-linked billionaires who made their fortunes in the carve-up of the former Soviet Union and now spend much of it on yachts and other luxuries in the West. Some of them have recently broken cover and distanced themselves from Putin's war.

Without naming anyone specifically, Putin referred to "national traitors" who "have villas in Miami or the French Riviera, who cannot make do without foie gras, oysters or gender freedom, as they call it" — referring to his apparent disdain for liberal values.

He criticized their "servile mentality" of being too Western "in their minds, and not here with our people and with Russia.”

And also issues dire threats against Russian society as a whole: “Putin also called for “a natural and necessary self-detoxification of society,” which would “strengthen our country, our solidarity and cohesion.”

An increasingly isolated and angry individual. The infamous Putin smirk has been wiped from his face. Is he actually calling for some Russian citizens or police to rise up and do a pogrom towards those that he defines as “traitors” (which, to him, means anyone who does not support him at the 100% level).

It's hard to take his criticisms seriously when Putin spent his political career stealing tens of billions from the Russian people while in office, then buying dozens of homes and yachts overseas with it.

Pot? Meet kettle!

money can buy a lot of power, influence, and hired assassins. Unsure if they would want to, because they made their billions from corruption allowed by Putin and robbing from the russian people, just like the American Oligarchs

Okay, it will be interesting to see how Putin’s Pals hijack this thread to actually defend his actions yet again. I suspect it won’t take long for that to happen.

I would not be surprised if one or more of the oligarchs arranges a Putin accident. Putin's disastrous attempt to establish a legacy has failed miserably and upset the billionaire's financial apple carts.

My concern is he is very smart and calculating, so maybe this is all part of some master plan. or he just lost his marbles

Yes, that’s what this war is all about: his legacy. The restoration of Mother Russia so that, upon his death or sooner, statues of him will be erected all across Russia as the patriotic savior of the homeland for posterity. A war based on nothing more than the ego of a murderous madman.

Oligarchs don't like losing money and will express that displeasure in a way that can likely depose Putin.

This is the Stalin in Putin.

Folks may not know, but the original Oligarchs of 7 to 9 were created by Yeltsin. When Putin gained power he gave them a choice, stay out of politics or else. Some of them bent the knee and supported Putin, other took the advice and stayed away from Moscow. Putin then made his friends and child hood buddies new oligarchs

I'd be curious to know if the ones Putin created are among those he is criticizing.

Most of Putin's closest oligarchs he knows from his hometown of Leningrad/St. Petersburg such as Arkady and Boris Rotenberg.
