Only the UN can legally send in "peacekeepers". This term is simply Putin propaganda to soften the international reaction.

This is now the second time within eight years that the Kremlin has admitted sending military forces into neighboring Ukraine.

Putin cannot have a western-leaning democracy on his border. His regime depends on authoritarianism and brutality to remain in control of Russia.

My understanding is the newly independent peoples republics of Luhansk and Donetsk reached out to the Russian Federation for protection from Ukrainians, just as Ukrainians are reaching out to Nato for protection.

All European nations are now at risk.

Putin obviously does not care a whit about the peace architecture in place on the European continent since 1946.

I think Putin overplayed his hand. If he'd simply left his army parked on the border he could have negotiated from a pretty strong position. By actually invading he's slammed the door on talks as the world lines up to impose crippling sanctions that will severely impact Russia's already fragile economy.

I thought he was strategically smarter.

I don't think there was anything to be gained by simply keeping his troops posted on the border.
