Considering Russia is supposed to be some kind of superpower I'm underwhelmed. OTOH with GDP less than the state of California one has to wonder how that can be.

I don't know the best way to handle it but you are absolutely correct in your basement of it being a threat. Its a grave threat that demands a substantive response.
Yeah, I'm a little unimpressed with the power of the Russian military. They were the other superpower at some point, but clearly not anymore. Were they ever, really? Was it always this weak facade only really backed up by nuclear weapons?
US nuclear doctrine is to respond to nuclear strikes with nuclear strikes. If Russia drops a nuke in Ukraine, there's not going to be a Russia anymore.
