President Joe Biden said Friday that he is convinced Russian President Vladimir Putin has decided to invade Ukraine. "As of this moment, I am convinced he has made the decision. We have reason to believe that," Biden said at the White House. “We believe that they will target Ukraine’s capital Kyiv.” The president cited U.S. intelligence but providing no details to support his assertion. Biden said diplomacy remains open to prevent war until Putin actually begins an attack. Russian proxy forces in Eastern Ukraine made new, unverified claims that the Ukrainian government was about to stage an unprovoked attack. They also announced an “evacuation” of 700,000 people in Russian-occupied Ukraine territory under the pretext of a looming Ukrainian invasion. "There is simply no evidence to these assertions and it defies basic logic,” to claim Ukraine is trying to escalate or commit genocide, Biden said. "We have reason to believe" Russia is preparing to attack "within days."

If you listened to the Russian ambassador to the UN, Moscow is indeed fabricating multiple fake casus beli for invading Ukraine.

Moscow's problem is that the US has consistantly warned the world of numerous possible Russian false-flag operations. Getting out ahead of the Kremlin's propaganda.

I think the only thing holding up Putin's invasion is that he's probably still trying to calculate the potential costs of taking the Donbas. In my estimation, a full-on invasion is probably off the table for now unless Ukraine's military somehow escalates beyond what Moscow thinks is appropriate. But I'd put a larger invasion and occupation of Donbas at probably north of 75% if not higher. I'd say higher but clearly Putin is measuring the potential consequences before he gives the final go ahead. He's also probably telegraphing to Europe, the US, and countries that matter, that Russia will inflict some pain in return. Right now it's basically a game of trying to show Russia's card hand, and trying to count the deck to see what the US and allies might have in theirs.

US intelligence syas that Kyiv is a target.

I can't see Putin doing anything less than an invasion up to the Dneiper River and capturing Odesa in the south.

This would provide Russia with a land route to Crimea and also capture all of Ukraine's Sea of Azov/Black Sea coastlines and ports.

Didn’t Russia build and complete a bridge over the body of water that separates Crimea from Russia proper?

With a little luck, Biden's unblemished record of being wrong on every topic since he took office will not be broken this time.

If Putin's exercise all along has to be to exact concessions on threat of war then Senile Joe is helping him magnificently. If it is a bluff? Maybe it is a bluff. Who knows. But if it is all a bluff then Putin has to do everything to present convincingly an Army ready to attack. Everything down to calling up reserves.

The Ukrainians habour a suspicion as to exactly what the Putin games is. They are not ruling out war but may have an instinct as to what the game actually is. Why won't Ukrainians know Russians? They have a long relationship going back as far as the Bolsheviks and beyond. Senile Joe doesn't.

At the moment Senile Joe is clearly spooked.

Yes, but it cannot replace actual highways. Besides, the construction work was shoddy and they are already having problems with the pylons.

You don't understand obviously.

The point here is to use US intelligence to get ahead of the Russians.

Cuts down on Putin surprises and tends to neutralize much Kremlin disinformation/propaganda.

Is Joe napping?

"Kremlin disinformation/propaganda"??? Whaaaaa?

Oh, you must mean like this:

You'd think they'd be better at it. On the other hand, Fox "News" proves every day all you need to do is feed people what they want to hear. The accuracy is immaterial.

No surprises here...

US Intelligence said that? Was there a document released that stated that or was Biden playing politics?

Taking Kyiv is not likely going to be possible for Russia to do without leveling the entire city. Would be neat to see, but also a horrible thing for the civilians trapped there. I don't believe Putin would try to take Kiev simply because sanctions would be much more damaging than if Putin took Eastern Ukraine.

I left a link somewhere here in this forum. The topic has become too vast now to easily locate things again.

The sanctions will [supposedly] be severe whether Putin takes Kyiv or not.

Why would the leveling of Kyiv be "neat to see"?

Have you been to Kiev? City is not that pretty, and would be "neat" to see as in this hasn't happened in a long time.

I wonder if it's largely about spooking western markets to create enough chaos and uncertainty to cause a serious market correction / crash. By "wonder," I mean that I think that this is a significant part of it.

That question is worth a search on the Internet. Since you asked the question, what is the answer?

I knew the answer before I posted the reply. I have learned a few more things since then.

No surprises here...

I have no idea why Pooty bothered with the false flags, since everyone knew they were going to happen for weeks. I guess he figured we're too dumb or something.

According to a LA Times reporter in Kyiv:

To hear Russian media tell it, the government of Ukraine is run by neo-Nazis waging a genocidal campaign against ethnic Russians in the country’s east, where Moscow-backed authorities regularly uncover mass graves full of the corpses of women and children with bound hands and bludgeoned heads even as they face the hell of constant shelling.
Such false images and narratives have become a daily staple in Russia....The Russian media have gone into overdrive with stories depicting a government in Kyiv so cruel that Moscow has no choice but to swoop in and protect the ethnic Russians in eastern Ukraine’s Donbas region.
“It’s a war between the Ukrainian government and its own people.... People are dying there every day. Thousands of civilians died there. Thousands of children lost their limbs there, buried in little coffins,” Margarita Simonyan, head of the state-funded broadcaster RT, said on a talk show on the Russia-1 channel.
