"Moscow, in another escalation toward a possible invasion of Ukraine, is issuing a growing drumbeat of accusations, all without evidence, that center on a single word. “What is happening in the Donbas today is genocide,” President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia said on Tuesday, referring to Ukraine’s east.

...invocations of genocide represent more than just a superficial casus belli. They reflect Moscow’s sincere belief that, in a world dominated by a hostile West, it is the rightful protector of Russian populations throughout the former Soviet republics. In that worldview, any break from Moscow’s influence within its sphere constitutes an attack on the Russian people as a whole — particularly in Ukraine, which Mr. Putin considers effectively Russian.

...And, maybe most important, it provides an ideological justification for a government, otherwise associated with corruption, that offers citizens fewer rights or opportunities.

...As Moscow’s challenges have grown, so have its claims of a great struggle to protect the Russian race, often centered on Ukraine. ...But each round also revealed a Kremlin growing steadily more paranoid and confrontational as its sphere of influence has come under greater pressure from crisis in Belarus, an uprising in Kazakhstan and an increasingly hard-line stance toward Moscow in Ukraine."

Nationalism and corruption seem to go hand-in-hand.

I am not looking forward to the fact that, once Russia commences with the invasion of Ukraine, at least 20% of the people here on DP will blame anybody BUT Vlad Putin.
Twenty percent will defend Putin as the real victim, and a good portion of that twenty percent will attempt to lay at least part of it on Biden and Democrats.
Simply put they're going to be cheering Putin...even if he actually does the unthinkable .... (nukes)

That's right, with a mushroom cloud in the background, twenty percent of the Americans here on DP will still defend Putin.
And they will all be tuned in to Fox, OAN and NewsMax for their inspiration.

Claims of genocide, lies though they are, certainly point to Putin's determination to make war.

Interestingly, according to the article, this message doesn't resonate well with Russians and they are sick of Putin's obsession with Ukraine.

Hysterical . Your link is direct to the CIA .
Why do you guys constantly regurgitate low grade propaganda -- Fake Crap to give it its true name ?

Seek out a few non MSM sources and find the real world outside of the US .

"Genocide" is the strongest possible term, and it's about time we got a rein on it. Arbitrary arrest, forcible indoctrination, discrimination in employment, are all terrible things. But the false equality between these forms of oppression, and deliberate killing of everyone still holding the culture or genome (or forcible sterilization,) just gives tyrants like Putin leave to levy war.

In a back-construction of the real reasons the Allies declared war on Nazi Germany, it pleases many on the winning side to say they did it because of genocide. Even the Pacific War is sometimes justified on the basis of protecting Koreans and Chinese from Japanese genocide. But neither is true. We beat Nazi Germany and Tojo's Japan because they posed imminent risks to our own national interests. In the case of Japan, it took a big old punch in the nose at Pearl Harbour before we realized that Asian interests are our interests too.

There's no doubt you could find Russians in the Ukraine who have been discriminated against, for instance in application to join the military or government. That's not genocide. Even arrest on trumped up charges is not genocide ... or if it is, the whole world is guilty.

I notice you don't dare provide a link to counter the NYTimes.

"Do your own research" is it?

Funny...Russia complaining about genocide. Shall we bring up Chechnya?

What Russia will get is a Chechnya on steroids. Not what they want, but what they will get.

Shall we bring up Chechnya
Come on, tell me about Chechnya. I am a member of this military company, I freed abducted people from Russia in Chechnya, where slavery and sharia law appeared. Tell me about the good Dudaev separatists who massacred the Cossack population of Chechnya, which to this day has the lowest percentage of not only the Russian population, but also other nationalities... it will be interesting for me to read this lie from a man who has never been to Chechnya.
