Mario Lleonart, 5 June 2015 — Beatings of peaceful demonstrators in Havana have been in the news for eight consecutive Sundays. In one of the first rounds, the son of the labor leader Jesús Menéndez was dragged for several yards along the ground with no concern for his advanced age.

On the seventh Sunday, between beatings and more beatings, it was obvious that another attempt was made to kill Raúl Borges Alvarez, this time with a sure blow to the chest–no matter (or, actually, because of) his having undergone heart surgery.

Even so, with respect to Raúl, officials from State Security warned his son, Ernesto, in prison, and his other son, Cesar, on the street, about the possibility of Raúl’s imminent demise from his additional ailment of “chronic pancreatitis”–the same condition that killed Juan Wilfredo Soto García on 8 May 2011, following a beating by police three days earlier–because of course death can be a natural consequence of a beating, especially if one has prior health problems, and it is well known that the area of the pancreas is another preferred target of the attackers.

Some of us had hoped, following the announcement about normalizing relations between the US and Cuba, that there would be a stop to–or at least a lessening of–the beatings, but we now know that what is happening is precisely the opposite.

It would seem that the beast is feeling mightier and able to strike with impunity. This is borne out by the 641 arrests in May, the highest number of detentions of dissidents in the last 10 months, and which always, in some fashion, involve violence.

Cuban dissident arrests and beating have sharply increased after the Obama administration and the Castroit regime agree to the normalization of relations on December 17, 2014. Since February the number of political arrests has increased 100%, as well as the number of attacks. The domestic terror of the Castroit regime have continued to increase after the regime was removed from the list of international terrorism by the administration.

In response to the arrest of human rights activists in Cuba, Freedom House issued the following statement:

“The Cuban government's blatant disregard for its citizens was evident again in the arrest of Ladies in White and other activists, who did nothing more than march peacefully after mass on Sunday and call for the release of political prisoners,” said Carlos Ponce, director for Latin America programs. “As the U.S. government normalizes relations with Cuba, it should press the Cuban government to stop harassing the Ladies in White and allow Cubans to express dissenting views."

Background:

Cuban authorities have arrested Ladies in White and other civil society activists on twelve consecutive Sundays for marching in support of political prisoners. On June 7, Cuban authorities beat and arrested dozens of activists in different regions of Cuba that participated peacefully in diverse activities such as #TodosMarchamos to demand that the government end its repression of the Ladies in White. Last Sunday more than 220 civil society activist, former political prisoners and opposition leaders were detained, including Berta Soler, Maria Labrada, Aide Gallardo Salazar and Lismeri Quintana, leaders of the Ladies in White, Antonio Rodiles from Estado SATS, and Jose Diaz of Nueva Republica.

Cuba is rated Not Free in Freedom in the World 2014, Not Free in Freedom of the Press 2015, and Not Free in Freedom on the Net 2014.

Freedom House is an independent watchdog organization that supports democratic change, monitors the status of freedom around the world, and advocates for democracy and human rights.
Roberto de Jesús Guerra Peréz of Hablemos Press report that on June 29, 2015, the regime “State Security, and other members of the Interior Ministry arrested at least 226 Cuban activists and dissidents this past Sunday, 28 June, 2015.” These arrests were carried out to keep activists and opposition members from attending Mass.

The independent reporter Agustín López Canino, who was also arrested, said: “The repression against the opposition movement has increased extraordinarily within the last six months and cannot be allowed to go on without attention focused on it.”

Antonio Rodiles After his Arrest

14ymedio, Regina Coyula, Havana, 6 July 2015 — Ailer González, artistic director of the Estado de SATS project, called me on Sunday afternoon. Knowing it was her, I opened the communication with the festive and very pertinent question of whether she was a grandmother. Sounding crushed and full of indignation she let me know that Antonio Rodiles, her partner and director general of Estado de Sats had just arrived home. He had been savagely beaten in the morning by several individuals dressed in plainclothes while trying to get to the Sunday March of the Ladies in White; he was then arrested, and because of his injuries, taken to the hospital.

According to Ailer, the doctors were shocked by his condition when he arrived at the emergency room. I do not believe that the doctors’ outrage goes far beyond the horror on display yesterday; there is an invisible but powerful barrier that many Cubans don’t dare to cross.

These kinds of incidents are neither spontaneous nor improvised; they are the result of operational plans and decisions by the political police. Antonio Gonzalez may be a figure who is detested by the Cuban government; but he was not armed, he was not heading out to assault a barracks, or to commit an attack.

Twelve weeks of sustained repression have been directed against the peaceful Sunday marches of the Ladies in White, and the dissidents and journalists who accompany them. Is this brutality and escalation? Are they using the dissidents that have come out against the normalization of relations with the United States to poison the normalization of those same relations? Or are they sending a message to the population? Or both combined?

The government should be more decent. The world is carefully watching Cuba at this time, and actions by their own henchmen only confirm the lack of freedoms. Once again I recall the words of Rosa Luxembourg – an uncomfortable Communist – “Freedom always has been and is the freedom of those who think differently.”
The same day that Obama said “this is what change looks like” during his announcement of reopening of the U.S. embassy in Havana on July1, Rodiles warned Obama that in a tweet that appeasement meant more repression of dissidents.

Rodiles was operated to repair his nose after receiving a beating at the hands of the Castroit regime security agents.

The four women are exercising their right to freedom of speech. The tyranny is getting more nervous since the tweets of what is happening in Egypt, Libya and Syria are been send to cell phones in Cuba, and people around the world are watching.
Under what principles do those 4 women have a "right to freedom of speech?"

Rodiles responded to Obama’s statement “I strongly believe that the best way for America to support our values is through engagement,” with a tweet asking, “How to talk about engagement after 11 Sundays of strong repression.” A reference to the repression of the Sunday Marches of the Ladies in White.

Donning Obama Masks Over 100 Cuban Dissidents Arrested
Capitol Hill Cubans: Donning Obama Masks, Over 100 Cuban Dissidents Arrested

Over 100 Cuban dissidents have been brutally beaten and arrested this weekend, as they peacefully gathered and demonstrated against the Castro dictatorship.

First, on Friday, over a dozen members of renowned democracy leader Dr. Oscar Elias Biscet's Emilia Project were arrested.

They include Yuset Perez Moreira, Guillermo Rodriguez Cardenas, Emilio Otero, Gladys Capote Roque, Nieves Capote, Miguel Angel Tirador, Enrique Torres, Camila Araujo, Eduardo Ramos, Augusto Guerra Marquez, Ubaldo Herrera and Lazaro Garcia.

Then, on Saturday, Sonia Garro, a member of The Ladies in White, was brutally beaten (see image below).

Garro, who was released as part of the Obama-Castro deal, was later hospitalized and re-arrested.

Finally, today, over 90 democracy activists, including 60 members of The Ladies in White were arrested, as they demonstrated donning Obama masks (see image below).

They denounced the Obama Administration's deals with the Castro dictatorship, which have sidelined Cuba's civil society and democracy movement.

Among those arrested were rocker Gorki Aguila, Claudio Fuentes, Camilo Olivera, Egberto Escobedo, Boris Gonzalez and Antonio Rodiles.

Meanwhile, the home of democracy leader Jorge Luis Garcia Perez "Antunez" was cordoned by regime officials, in order to prevent him from traveling to Havana to join the demonstration.

It was a scene akin to 2009's Green Revolution in Iran, whereby democracy activists questioned what side Obama was on -- a sad confirmation of the lack of "moral clarity" in his foreign policy.

This violence is taking place as Secretary of State John Kerry prepares his visit to Havana this week, and amid speculation that dissidents will not be invited to the flag-raising ceremony at the American Embassy, in order not to "offend" the Castro dictatorship.

It's "what change looks like" in Obama's Cuba policy.

Chilean lawmaker beaten, arrested during protest in Cuba
Chilean lawmaker beaten, arrested during protest in Cuba | Fox News Latino

Published September 07, 2015 / EFE

A right-wing Chilean congressman just back from a private visit to Cuba complained Monday that he was beaten, handcuffed and held for nearly three hours by Cuban authorities for participating in a peaceful demonstration by the Ladies in White dissident organization in Havana.

"Without any dialogue, a shock group of the Castro regime arrived; they proceeded to beat those of us who were marching, without asking us for any identification and they arrested us," Felipe Kast told reporters at Santiago's international airport.

He added that he remained under detention for more than 2 1/2 hours until he was permitted to make a telephone call.

"There was no dialogue, the shock group of approximately 100 people simply arrived in vehicles, in buses, and I was knocked to the ground, handcuffed and taken to another place without being able to explain or learning any reason for it," he said.

Kast thanked Chilean Foreign Minister Heraldo Muñoz and the country's ambassador in Cuba, Gonzalo Mendoza, for their efforts to obtain his release and added that he had traveled to Havana to spend time with relatives who live on the island.

He said that the people who arrested him probably did not know that he was a Chilean lawmaker.

"I imagine that they didn't know I was a legislator, which makes it just as serious as if they would have known," said Kast, who added that each week the members of the Ladies in White suffer the same treatment to which he was subjected.

Pro-government lawmaker Jorge Tarud, chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee in Chile's lower house, expressed his outrage at Kast's arrest, but he added that the lawmaker had not informed the Chilean Embassy in Cuba of his intention to participate in a demonstration.

Meanwhile, Communist congressman Daniel Nuñez said that Kast had tried to obstruct the strengthening of relations between Santiago and Havana after Muñoz's official visit to Cuba last week.
The main cause for the attacks and arrests is the regime repressive mindset, which view anyone who participate in peaceful demonstration as a thread and deserving punishment. Not even been an alien visitor will spare the person from the police violent treatment. The regime considers dissidents to be mercenaries.

The civil and political rights in Cuba had worsened. The regime secret political police and para-police agents have increased violence against dissidents. During August has been over 768 political arrests, the highest monthly figure so far in 2015, and many cases of physical and brutal aggression.

The man who did this to Sirley in Cuba is free to walk the streets today

Cuban human rights defender, Sirley Ávila León, age 56, was gravely wounded in a machete attack on May 24, 2015 at 3:00pm by Osmany Carrión who had been "sent by state security thugs." She lost her left hand while raising it to block a machete blow to the head that would have surely killed her wielded by Osmany Carrión. Carrión continued the attack striking again at her head and she blocked the blow with her right arm which the machete cut deep and through the bone, breaking it. At the same time Osmany's wife grabbed the severed hand and threw it into a filthy pig pen contaminating it so that it could not be re-attached. The attack went on with further machete blows on both legs. A detailed breakdown of the event was posted previously on this blog, and is repeated here for one simple reason.

In Cuba where there is not an independent judiciary and all is subject to the whims of the dictatorship the nature of the attack and the "judicial process" involving this case did not charge Osmany Carrión with aggravated attempted murder but with the lesser charge of "bodily injury" and sentenced him to six years in prison. However he has a pass to enter and leave the prison during this time effectively leaving him free, and adding weight to the charge that the attack was engineered by state security. While the UN celebrates the Castro regime's treatment of women this is what is happening in Castro's Cuba today. On the day of the attack Osmany Carrión told her that he would decapitate her and that he would not spend much, if any, time in prison for what he had done to her and the Castro regime has made that prediction a reality.

Meanwhile artists and musicians languish in prison for their artwork and lyrics.
The Castroit regime does not care about consequences for criminal behavior. For the last 56 years such behavior has been its operating procedure. Under this regime justice is a four letter word. It use extreme force with impunity, which include beatings and gun-related deaths. This horrible machete attack against a woman dissident when unreported by the MSM.

The Castroit mafia does not permit dissidents. Its brutal policies deal with activists like Orlando Zapata Tamayo, Wilman Villar, Laura Pollan, and Oswaldo Paya by murdered them. The 13 de Marzo tug-boat massacre of 1994, as well as the execution and incarceration of many who have tried to escape the island also demonstrate the extent to which the regime will go to maintain control over its territory.

The Castroit mafia operates in organized crime, like drug trafficking, trafficking in stolen art and other property. It also harbor fugitives, utilize slave labor and sanction prostitution. The nepotism of this regime far exceed those that can be found in mafia organizations.

Remembering the Shameful Killing of Ladies in White Founder Laura Pollán

October is a month of terror in Cuba. Socialist psychopaths are known to unleash hell when our fake, tropical Autumn arrives, usually resulting in real political casualties.

As early as October 1959, the Castro brothers disappeared Camilo Cienfuegos, a key leader of the Cuban revolution, along with his close allies. They then propped up Cienfuegos as a fallen hero who died in a plane accident, and yet, of course, they never showed us the plane or any other kind of evidence.

In October 1962, they planned to destroy the United States with Russian nuclear warheads secretly installed on the island. Fidel Castro’s desire to achieve more fame than Jesus led him to urge Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev to launch a “preemptive” attack against the United States from Cuba, and start a thermonuclear war.

When Khrushchev realized the sort of person he was dealing with, he replied: “While we understand your goal, your proposal is a mistake.”
Laura Pollán, late leader of the Ladies in White, according to the medical certificate die of diabetes mellitus type II, bronchial pneumonia and a syncytial virus (common cold). But there was no independent medical diagnosis and no autopsy, and weeks before her death she was in good health.

On September 24 Laura was pinched in the right arm as can be seen in the photo below, and 8 days after the attack she felt ill and went to the hospital and told she was OK. She was very weak and on October 7 went back to the hospital, and was hospitalized. Her health deteriorated under the state medical care. She died on the 14 and two hours later was cremated. If we connect the dots, the result points to a premeditate murder disguised as an illness.

This is a classic case of state murder, a criminal state with its security apparatus running wild. Change, unless it comes from the top, requires external support. This is one of the reasons that dollars from ecotourism should be limited to a minimum to hasten a transition to a free society.

The "Cuba Archive" has an ongoing report about the female victims of the Castroit regime. Until 2003 the number of death stands at 216. Link: http://cubaarchive.org/home/images/stories/truth and memory/female_victims.pdf

The graffiti artist jailed for 10 months after he painted the names “Fidel” and “Raúl” on two pigs said today he isn’t backing down.
“Art is my life and I can’t breathe without a life,” said Danilo Maldonado, also known as “El Sexto.”

“Of course I’m going to continue doing what I do – rebellious art,” the 32-year-old artist told Along the Malecón.
El Sexto’s release from jail on Oct. 20 was a fleeting victory for democracy activists, but they continue to face intense pressure from Cuba’s security forces.

The number of physical attacks against dissidents and democracy activists in September jumped to 93, from 21 in August, a 342 percent increase, according to the independent Cuban Commission for Human Rights and National Reconciliation in Havana.

Security police also carried out at least 882 arbitrary detentions in September, the highest number since June 2014, the commission reported on Oct. 5.

Cuban Dissident Fights to Survive Day 86 of Hunger Strike

As the White House begins to hint that President Barack Obama would like to visit Cuba before his term is over, a political prisoner freed and re-arrested due to the U.S.-Cuba “normalization” deal has lost cognitive functions as he struggles to survive his 87th day on a hunger strike.

Vladimir Moreira Bacallao, an anti-Communist activist, was released along with 53 other prisoners of conscience in January 2015 following President Obama’s speech a month earlier announcing he would make concessions to the regime of dictator Raúl Castro. He was arrested again following an incident in April 2015, in which he posted a sign on his door mocking Cuba’s legislative elections, in which only Communist Party members can participate. The sign read: “I vote for my freedom, and not in one of those elections where I can’t even choose a president.” He was sentenced to serve four years in prison in November, and has been on a hunger strike since October 9.

Morera Bacallo reached day 80 of his hunger strike on December 28. Today is his 87th day without food.

No report whatsoever in the Castroit regime control press about the medical condition of Vladimir Morera in his 88 day of hunger strike.Vladimir belongs to the peaceful opposition group Movimiento Cubano Reflexión. He was one of 53 prisoners freed as part of the negotiation leading to the re-establishment of U.S.-Castroit regime relations on December 17, 2014.

Vladimir was imprisoned again in April for placing a sign in front of his home on the eve of local elections to the Assembly of People’s Power; it read: "I vote for my freedom and not in elections not allowing me to elect my president.” Because of it, he suffered an “act of repudiation” by the regime incited demonstration, was arrested, and sentenced in November to four years of prison for allegedly causing public disorder during this incident.

The cell phone video shows Pakistanis medical students besieged by Cuban security dressed in full riot gear and assault rifles with fixed bayonets. Bayonets, other than in drill an ceremonial occasions, are used as a weapon in close combat. To some extent it seems extreme this show of force against unarmed students.

At the risk of being misunderstood, let me say one thing about BAYONETS. They tend to squelch violence by their appearance.

When a bayoneted rifle is held at HIGH PORT, the bayonet is easily seen, and has an ability to stop violence before it starts.

Though bullets will kill, there is something psychological about getting stuck with cold steel that makes most run the other way.

I am not excusing the riot police in any way, but believe me, fixing bayonets is a way to DISCOURAGE any violence from starting in the first place.

That may be why they fixed them in the first place.

I did not see any photos, but all SKS rifles have a permanently attached folding bayonet anyway.

Some rare models of AK also have a folding bayonet.

So IF the bayonet is already on the rifle anyway, it would be a very cheap way to discourage violence by just flipping it up and locking it in place. They are also colored a brushed silverfish color to help them be seen. It is their industrial chrome finish.

Havana – The Cuban Commission on Human Rights and National Reconciliation on Monday said that there were at least 1,416 arbitrary political arrests in Cuba during March, of which 498 took place during the March 20-22 visit of U.S. President Barack Obama.

"In the days of the historic and friendly visit to Cuba of President Barack Obama, the island's government, instead of ensuring an atmosphere of public tranquility, unleashed a true wave of political repression and uncounted intimidating actions," the dissident group said in its monthly report on repression by the Castro regime.

The figure of 1,416 arrests, most of them lasting just hours, is one of the highest monthly totals registered in the past five years, exceeded only by the 1,447 arbitrary arrests recorded in November 2015.

A Cuban police officer arrests a member of the Damas de Blanco, or "Ladies In White."

The Cuba President Barack Obama will visit this month has in 2016 suffered some of the most brutal repression in the past decade.
The Cuban Commission on Human Rights and National Reconciliation this week reported it had counted at least 1,141 political arrests in February, the third-highest tally since January 2010, surpassed only by the 1,447 arrests in November 2015 and 1,414 in January. The count so far for 2016 -- at least 2,555 -- is almost a third of the 8,616 arrests recorded in all of 2015.

Raul Castro, not Barack Obama, is responsible for the repression suffered by peaceful opposition activists and others in Cuba. But Obama is not absolved of culpability because his capitulation to the dictatorship on human rights issues so that American tourists can hit Cuban beaches and he can build his legacy -- as evidenced by his silence and inaction as the regime cracked down even harder -- has been received as a signal in Havana that there will be no price to pay.

The president has a chance to come down on the right side in Cuba, by using his visit to the island to highlight and embrace those brave Cubans who each day and each week take to the streets to demand democracy, freedom and a respect for human rights. If he does -- and Secretary of State John Kerry's decision to cancel his visit in advance of Obama's suggests he might be planning to -- I will be surprised. But then I will applaud him for delivering such a powerful blow to tyranny.

And if Obama doesn't, it guarantees there will be in Cuba many more months like February.
With the Obama visit to Cuba, repression is on the rise, and in the absence of international condemnation the Castroit regime feels free to administer publicly the beatings the Ladies in White endure in order to show who is boss. The regime used to send women only to attack the Ladies but now they send men as well. They punch the Ladies with the clear intent to hurt them and sometime break their bones.

304 Dissidents Arrested Ahead of Obama Visit, Cuba Human Rights Group Says
304 Dissidents Arrested Ahead of Obama Visit, Cuba Human Rights Group Says - ABC News

By Jonathan Karl and Arlette Saenz
Mar 21, 2016

HAVANA, Cuba -- The head of Cuba’s leading human rights organization tells ABC News that 304 people were arrested for criticizing the Cuban government just days before President Obama’s historic visit to the island.

The Cuban Commission on Human Rights provided a list of names and the locations where the arrests took place -- 104 of them in Havana and others at locations throughout Cuba.

“Since last year, we’re talking about thousands” of arrests, Elizardo Sanchez told ABC. “The worst thing is that the Cuban government has unleashed a huge wave of political oppression, and during Obama’s visit this morning they were arresting people and this will go on for the rest of the day and probably tomorrow.”

The crackdown underscores persistent challenges to freedom of speech and peaceful dissent inside Cuba, despite rapid normalization of diplomatic ties with the United States. The report also contrasts with Cuba President Raul Castro’s insistence at a press conference Monday denying detention of any political opponents.

The Obama administration is more interested in a relationship with the Castroit regime than with the dissidents. The softening of the trade embargo and tourists travel is filling the coffers of the Castroit regime, helping the regime to maintain its grip on power.

The Castroit regime doesn’t allow people to protest like in the U.S. and other Westerners democracies. Theys allow peaceful demonstration by protesters. In the Castroit kingdom the demonstrators are picks up in buses and taken to jail and are released later on. The Castroit regime constitution don’t recognize the rights of freedom of speech and peaceful protests.

14ymedio, Luz Escobar, Havana, 8 June 2016 – The residents of 418 Villegas Street, in Old Havana, were unhurt after a building collapse at nine o’clock Wednesday morning. The collapse of the roof of the house on the first floor was one of the 17 partial and total building collapses that occurred in the Cuban capital, four of them in the historical district, as a result of the heavy rains of recent days.

With very few belongings salvaged from the rubble, residents of the place waited Wednesday afternoon for the authorities to address their situation. “We’ll sleep outside here, even though it’s raining, so that no one steals anything,” said a young resident of the property, who maintained the illusion that “some police officers to guard things” would arrive.

Leticia Ramirez, seven months pregnant and also a resident of the collapsed building, said that if something had happened “at six o’clock, when everyone was in the house, it would have ended in a tragedy.” She explained that the collapse “could have been avoided” because the three families affected by the collapse of part of the building had started “years ago” the process to obtain a bank loan to undertake repairs.

However, Ramirez says that the bureaucratic process to obtain permits to undertake the work in the Havana historical center took too long. “And in the end look what happened.” The woman enumerated all the problems, pointing to a pile of rubble that on Wednesday blocked the passage of cars and pedestrians.
