The single most important necessity in any so called Country that claims to be Democratic is a free press / media.

Yes, these folk should be responsible not only to those they report about but also to those who will read / listen to their words.

I do not claim that Putin authorized this womans murder, but in light of what he has done in Chechnya installing a puppet NON Democratic Government and that which is apparently proposing to do by coercing both the Ukraine and Georgia Governments to do, it seems likely that someone in his administration is decidedly unhappy with a free press.

It is vitally important that people talk about the sharp and continuing reductions in Russian Democracy.

The range of these is (for USSR style of Government) quite normal, but for a country that claims to be Democratic and is anything but, this type of behavior is reprehensible.

The way Russia does business with the rest of the world needs to be sharply criticized as it makes it's own business rules, yet changes these rules after (in particular) the west invests in ailing Russian businesses, Putin is acting like as big a despot as was Stalin.

Unlike Stalin who placed his dissidents and perceived dissidents in forced labor camps, Putin is authorising the murder of his dissidents, while at the same time extolling to the world his determination to continue to make Russia a Democratic nation.
