Progressive

From what I am reading the sentiment seems to be that the difference is in the source of each group's core values.

The view is:
1. Liberals tend to have a different take on the constitution than conservatives but have views that tend to be constitutionally based.
2. Progressives are inspired by what is going on in europe.

There are progressives on both sides though. To be truly fair, we would need to add "Progressive Democrat", "Progressive Republican", etc... The best way to show that you are a progressive is to edit your custom user title and put progressive there. That, combined with your political lean, can easily show that you are a progressive socialist (or whatever you so choose).

What is the different between the two?
Progressive is a more correct term, it means edging slowly toward socialism. Liberal is a term they stole from "liberalism" (Age of Enlightenment), which they have nothing in common with.

Sure, and while we are at it, let's add Neocon, Paleocon, Tea Partier, Limousine Liberal, Liberal Radical, and a thousand other leans, so that when someone new joins DP, he is either scared off, or agrees to use the Official DP Unabridged Political Lean Dictionary to try and figure out where he fits in.

All I am saying with this bit of hyperbole is that, after you go so far, it usually is somewhat of a pain in the ass to go further. Seriously, though, I think things are OK as they are.

There has been a lot of talk lately about progressives being a different sort of political animal than liberals..

All that is happening is beck's attempt to demonize the word "progressive" just like Limbaugh demonized the word "liberal".

In all fairness, progressives have done an outstanding job of demonizing the term and themselves. Beck is merely pointing this out to the masses. But it's more fun to shoot the messenger than it is to fight the disease isn't it?

To me, "liberals" seem to be intelligent and rational people while "progressives" tend to have limp wrists and some serious passive aggressive tendencies.

Maybe that's just my unique experience, though. :2wave:

To me, national sympathies have shifted slightly to the left (of what they used to be, not of center), and the word "liberal" is no longer synonymous in the public mind with "filth".
Therefore, conservatives need another label, one which carries more heinous connotations, with which to brand their political adversaries.
"Progressive" is what they came up with.

On the other hand, a lot of the liberals I know use the terms interchangeably.

Moderator's Warning:
People. This is a forum to discuss feedback/suggestions, NOT to debate political affiliation; there are plenty of other places on this site to do that.

We do not add additional political leans or affiliations. If we did every time someone asked, we'd have almost as many as we have members.

Well, I wasn't asking for me since I don't think I would use it, but it seemed like a valid label.

I don't think it needs to be added. Every political lean has some gray areas but what it means to be "progressive" is quite subjective. At least with liberal, conservative, moderate, libertarian, or independent, we have a general idea of where they're coming from. "Progressive" is a loaded and somewhat arrogant term.
