Backers of illegal immigration at a rally near Los Angeles took down an American flag at a U.S. post office, stamped on it and replaced it with a Mexican flag as police looked on,

Police officers in Maywood, Calif., Saturday eventually came to the pole to remove the flag but had bottles and rocks thrown at them,

The radio listener, volunteering for Save our State, said that when she arrived at the rally she was rushed by counter-protesters who called out, "Death to the Minutemen."

"They pushed me around and told me if I was to take one step further, they would beat the s*** out of me," Sandra said. "I looked to the back of me and there were about four police officers leaning on their vehicle just watching, doing nothing!"

As she stepped forward, Sandra said, the counter-protesters stole her sign and ripped it up as another threw water on her.

Sandra said that as police officers watched, another woman was beaten, as well as an elderly man, noting the counter-protesters "tend to pick on the weaker targets."

Johnson said that "after the local post office took down the American flag at closing time, pro-immigration demonstrators promptly ran the Mexican flag up the flagpole. Eventually, police officers surrounded the flagpole and tried to get the Mexican flag down, but the cords got twisted and they could only lower it to half-staff."

I didn't watch the videos, but how do we know that this was a pro-illegal immigration rally? Clearly these were people who are angry at the US, but does that mean they are illegal aliens? Or that they are seeking certain concessions for illegal aliens? All we have here is the word of "Sandra," a caller to a radio program -- not the most reliable of sources, unfortunately.

If you disagree with what the rally was promoting -- assuming anyone knows what the rally was promoting -- have another rally, and raise a big American flag. I'm commenting because the ethnic makeup of the town has absolutely nothing to do with the incident. It is an explanation for why this happened in this place, but it doesn't make what happened right, it doesn't make it wrong; it has no bearing on the issue.

If they are illegal, or if they are legal aliens who committed crimes, they should be deported. If they are citizens who committed criminal actions, they should go to jail. But they shouldn't be thrown out of the country just because you don't like their politics, or how they express themselves. We have the freedom of speech in this country, remember? Illegal immigrants don't want to become citizens; that's why they're illegal. They want to make money. Though there is a percentage that do want to be citizens but are caught in the Catch-22 of work visas: you need a job to obtain a visa, but you generally have to get into the US before you can get a job. So some people come here illegally, find work, and then apply for work visas -- at which point they become legal.

The way to stop illegal immigration is to stop the motivation to come: stop people from employing illegal workers, and/or make other countries financially viable, so the people can get jobs at home.

My only problem is that the protestor took down a flag at a Federal Post Office. That is not a coffee shop or in the park. A federal building. That bugs me no matter what the heck their gripe is. Then to raise a mexican flag? WTF?

I thought so, don't talk about it if you don't have a clue why things are being done. Many cops I work with, including myself would love to do more, if not for the paranoid brass being afraid of negative media attention and liability suits.

Oh yeah, not everyone is an illegal, and disrespecting our flag is not a criminal act.

However, assaulting people, and ESPECIALLY assaulting a police officer is.

Police officers don't make up or create laws.
If you don't like the fact that im not going to arrest someone for something that isn't against the law go talk to your ****ing congressman.

However, in the situation that you talk about with a postal office and such, that, if it actually happened, should have been a crime. But thats another one of those chain of command issues. Sometimes enforcing a law is at police discretion, however, thier discretion could get overruled by a chain of command that is afraid of a little media attention.
