They are nothing of the sort.

Because you, as a liberal, are the judge of who is and isn't a "real" conservative.

I am not a liberal in the American sense - quite the opposite. But OK, as a REAL conservative, you tell me, if a political group wants to expand the welfare "safety net", blocks privatization of industries, pushes for housing loans guarantees, attacks free trade, etc, etc. - are they "conservatives", or something else entirely?

Re: Princeton professor faces three years in jail for saying Poles killed more Jews t

the actual 'crime' seems to be "publicly insulting the nation"

nationalism truly is a cancer that needs to be destroyed. They have learned nothing from the world wars

The "crime" is making an accusation which essentially implies "yeah, you guys were just as bad as the Nazis".

I can see why people would be upset. Especially seeing as the Poles were fighting while the US was whistling Dixie and trying to decide how many Jews they didn't want in the country.

Re: Princeton professor faces three years in jail for saying Poles killed more Jews t

there should be numbers to back up the claim, yes? What do the numbers say?

regardless, he shouldn't go to jail for it.

If you read the article there are 2 ways of looking at the numbers.

Re: Princeton professor faces three years in jail for saying Poles killed more Jews t

In this point the Poles are only following Germany and other Western European countries, where for similar statements you can also be jailed for years.

Are you referring to Hate Speech, Holocaust denial?

Does Germany have such a law as noted below on the books?

Princeton professor faces three years in jail for saying Poles killed more Jews than they killed Nazis | National Post

A Polish prosecutor has questioned a Polish-American scholar, Jan Tomasz Gross, to determine if he committed the crime of publicly insulting the nation with a statement on Polish violence against Jews during the Second World War.

Re: Princeton professor faces three years in jail for saying Poles killed more Jews t

What does it matter what he said , unless it was a threat of some kind . It must be a new PC thing the left loves so much .

A right wing govt is in power.

Re: Princeton professor faces three years in jail for saying Poles killed more Jews t

holocaust denial is a crime, but saying "we didn't respond well against nazi germany" is not to my knowledge.

Holocaust denial is a crime in western Europe. Slandering the WWII war effort of the homeland is a crime in Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, the Baltics (they have occasionally proscecuted 'slander' based charges from both a right wing and a left wing perspective), and evidently Poland.

That aside, free speech should not be a crime. That aside, I doubt the professor's statements are accurate. Polish collaborators (as opposed to Volks Deutch hmm.... Professor Jan Gross) were very few in number.

I am not a liberal in the American sense - quite the opposite.

You are in the dictionary sense.

But OK, as a REAL conservative, you tell me, if a political group wants to expand the welfare "safety net", blocks privatization of industries, pushes for housing loans guarantees, attacks free trade, etc, etc. - are they "conservatives", or something else entirely?

Free trade is a liberal policy. So opposing it is antiliberal.

I'm going to need more specific information on the other three claims. The first one sounds highly problematic, and the second one somewhat so (depending on what industry we're referring to). But I'll need to know more before I make a definitive statement.

In any case, the party in question is pro-Poland and pro-morals, so it has that in its favor.

Certainly the so called Auschwitz lie and a number of related types of opinion utterance are examples of limited freedom of expression by law. But there are others.
103 StGB of German ciminal law is one paragraph that forbids public insult in therein described circumstances. It is quite in the limelight just now as a comedian made fun of a foreign head of state. The latter filed charges and the law would require the comedian be prosecuted and imprisoned publicly insulting Turkey and its president.

A right wing govt is in power.

Eh, semantics again. In American/Canadian terms, Nowoczesna - the Polish party I would vote for if I had double citizenship - is definitely "right-wing" - and they are as far removed from PiS by every parameter as possible...

Now would you still vote for them?

Re: Princeton professor faces three years in jail for saying Poles killed more Jews t

Prison? That's a socialist country for you.

And Bernie Sanders is doing well in an American election.

Yikes.

If you had read the article you would see that this is coming from the country's conservative government.

Poland’s case against Gross, which also involves a presidential threat to strip him of a state honour, has raised questions about the conservative leadership’s commitment to the freedom of scholarship. Law and Justice, a conservative and nationalistic party that controls both the presidency and parliament, is also centralizing power in a way that has raised concerns about its commitment to democracy more broadly.

You also kind of missed the point that the left of the country is challenging and protesting the action.

Could be, but if so, way way back.

Professors statement is?

Professors statement - Right

Professors statement - Wrong

Not sure

Other – pls explain

Hmmm....

What does it say about a scholar who has to use super-charged language like that. Those are the words of an attention whore. And this leads me to believe this is being blown way out of proportion..

Gross, a professor based at Princeton University, told The Associated Press he was questioned for five hours Tuesday in Katowice but does not yet know if he will be charged with the alleged offence, which can carry a prison term of up to three years.

That and the fact the article was published a year ago.....

Well, calling the previous ruling party (the Civic Platform, classical liberals with a Catholic tilt) and the Nowoczesna ("Modern") party (classic liberals without any tilts) "the left" is quite a stretch. And yeah, the few surviving social-democrats are also protesting...They should be good for something, I guess :)

I disagree- remember that film, forget the name, came out decades ago abut French complicity with the Nazi's and deportation of Jews.
Austria, how long before they even admitted they were complicit.
Many countries still reuse to acknowledge that parts of their population at the time actively assisted the Nazis

Re: Princeton professor faces three years in jail for saying Poles killed more Jews t

Read up on Antisemitism in Poland - before and during the War

Yes, there was anti semitism, but to take that and say "you guys spent more time killing Jews than you did fighting Nazis" is controversial at best

Re: Princeton professor faces three years in jail for saying Poles killed more Jews t

Kindly, re-read what I have written.

Sir my apologies.

Read up on it, and other countries that hid and still hide their complicity in the Shoah.

Re: Princeton professor faces three years in jail for saying Poles killed more Jews t

What the actual ****? Why is this man going to jail in the first place? Simply stating your opinion (no matter how moronic it might be) shouldn't get you thrown in JAIL.

Agreed. Many countries in the EU have hate speech laws. This is overboard though.
