in engineering school, for instance, one does learn problem solving, usually at the direction of professors and those whose texts are studied. one will not be successful in that endeavor unless they have a substantial IQ

You're talking about conventional intelligence, not practical intelligence acquired by actual exposure to many different practical interests, not just academic ones with staged problems and conventional answers.
