Pressure is growing on President Trump to leave office before his term ends due to his role in the deadly riots that consumed Capitol Hill this week.

Sen. Lisa Murkowski (Alaska) on Friday became the first Senate Republican to call on Trump to resign after he whipped up a crowd he summoned to Washington, D.C., to protest President-elect Joe Biden’s election victory.

Democrats have drawn up articles of impeachment citing an “incitement of insurrection” and Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.) has said he’d consider voting to remove Trump from office if the House votes to impeach him again.

Repub Senators are looking at how Trump's violent stunt will impact their reelection chances.
 

This will be dependent on polling data I'm sure. Right now it's a big issue, but never underestimate peoples' short attention spans.
 
Trump admitting fault and voluntarily stepping down is the Republican party's best hope for political relevance in the near future. Any other move is likely to cost the party dearly.

The hand grenade that the Republicans voted into office in the hopes of decimating their opponents has exploded in their hand.

They will start to care when they realize they have been lied to. When the Trump sheep are wiped out or deprogrammed we can start healing.
 
One reason for Trump to choose resignation is that he's afraid of being charged with sedition and inciting violence. President Pence could then pardon him.

I have every confidence that spineless lick-spittle Pence would have no trouble justifying it to himself. It would be "for the good of the country." It would "allow the healing to begin."

More importantly for Pence, it could help his reputation among the Trumpers who feel that Pence betrayed Trump by not participating in his attempted coup.

But what about Independents? 89% of Republicans supported Trump in 2016 and more Independents supported him than supported Clinton and he still lost the popular vote to her.

How many votes can Republicans afford to lose?
 
You gotta do what you gotta do to keep this mad man under control. The fist impeachment failed, but we never again heard about him trying to extort another country for help in the election. So the effort may be worth it if it helps keep him in line, even if it fails to achieve the desired results.
 

More importantly, it is imperative to keep future presidents in line. That is the real cost of this party-over-country mentality. Because Republicans can't afford to divide their party, they are risking handing more latitude to future Democratic presidents who they really don't want to have the same latitude.

Republicans can't have their cake and eat it too. If they want Democrats to hold their presidents to a high standard, they can't lower the standard for Republican presidents. I think conservatives are going to come to rue the day they ever elected Donald Trump President of the United States.
 
Trump resigning, offering a full throated retraction of the fake fraud claims in exchange for a Pence pardon would be the best outcome for Trump, Pence and the nation that lets the GOP control their narrative. As icing on the cake, some gestures toward Biden, and some gestures from Biden toward Trump and Pence, would go a ways toward healing the divide.

The only alternative would be impeachment + and the national guard neutralizing enemy combatants who attempt further terrorism and sedition... not a good situation to end up in.
 
Trump resigning is in his own best interest. He should negotiate a pardon coincidental with his resignation and get the hell out of Dodge. He can spin it as the big bad Dems going mercilessly after him, he can run for office again and continue to scam his base for campaign donations, he can claim to be the martyr AND he will be assured a get out of jail card for his federal crimes. A self-pardon is an "iffy" route.

Take the easy way out Trump.....just get the hell out as graciously or ungraciously as you wish......just go!

Unfortunately, I doubt they'll admit they were lied to.
 
It should be interesting in 2022 if Trump campaigns to primary any Senators or Congressmen he perceived were disloyal to him.
 

I don’t think he should get a pardon unless he renounces his fake fraud claims and defangs his followers. Either we get something for the pardon, or we impeach him for insurrection.
 


Your first paragraph is probably true. But it ain't gonna happen. Trump is who he is and he will never admit anything about being wrong on his election fraud charges,

You have to remember, he has profiled his entire life on lies, deceit, chicanery, fraud and manipulation, You can't change the spots on this leopard,

fair. And the decision to impeach is not up to Pence. If they want an optimal outcome then they should coordinate. A free pass pardon from Pence won’t stop the impeachment train. One with strings for Trump might.
 
As we know, his propensity is to do the wrong thing, and he has never missed an opportunity to be his own worst enemy. He has an inability to carefully weigh options, and is only highly reactionary. He is willfully ignorant with a high level of disinterest in learning. Hey, he just wings it man.
 
Trump won't step down. His ego will never let that happen. And I'm fine with that. I want him exposed for all he is. I want him held accountable for inviting the riot. And I want his followers endlessly shamed for their undying slavish adoration of him. **** all of them.
 

I am just describing an optimal outcome, not a likely one.

the likely outcome:
- there will be no resignation or pardon
- there will be a messy and ugly 2nd impeachment leading to Trump being banned from future office
- Trump will continue to sow discord with fake fraud claims and continue stirring the pot to push people toward insurrection, then get off on watching it unfold on TV as a way to relax after golf. He’ll ask for donations to “beat liberals” and ”stop socialism” and use this money to pay down personal debt.
- many Republicans will continue to show Ted Cruz levels of backbone
- however many others will balk at supporting overtly Trump-loyal candidates
- many more Trump supporters will become radicalized and attempt domestic terrorism and insurrection
- many of them will fall to clean single shots
- republicans will be too fractured to advance centrist candidates who pass Trump loyalty tests and will get utterly massacred in thr 2022 midterms
- Ivanka 2024 will become the rallying cry for A lot of these people, which is what she intended from the very beginning
 
I hadn't heard Ivanka 2024 yet.
 

This is what I think will happen.

-He will not resign
-The House will impeach but McConnell will let it die in the Senate.
-Trump will try to remain relevant to his base and basically be Trump while having the weight of the legal system crashing down on him.

Things that are on the outside chances but I wouldn't be surprised.

- Trump will pardon himself
-Trump will pardon the rioters

Things that are absolutely buck wild, would surprise me but is possible

-The Sec of Def sat on his hands putting out the National Guard on the order of Trump because for a brief period, the President thought that this would pull it off.

it is coming. There is a coming turf war in the Trump family. Ivanka wants the resolute desk and now she’s helped bump Daddy off (after first convincing him to run so she could ride his coattails to prominence) her path is open. She is privately in support of impeachment since at no cost can Donald be allowed to interfere with her 2024 aspirations. That is why impeachment will lead to conviction—she will personally see to it that 17 republican senators get on board. She needs the Trump more than he does and she will not allow him to wreck. And make no mistake, she will do whatever it takes.
 

He just tried to extort a state for 11,780 votes so he could beat Biden by one vote lol.
 

He's facing inciting to riot & sedition charges. If he resigns, Pence becomes President & can pardon Trump.
