President George H W Bush dead at 94

Even that I am a Democrat I liked his administration.

You hate Trump, I assume. George H.W., the Bushes, hate/hated Trump, too. They are neoconservatives which mean they believe in absolute free-market capitalism (you'd better rethink your opinion of George H.W. Bush since you're a socialist) and the US intervening in foreign affairs to give advantages to foreign countries. I liken the neoconservative to a christian church with a heavy emphasis on outreach to foreign nations. Some churches have placed most of their ministry on the heavy outreach and less on the fundamentals of Christianity. One such church is next door to my home. I digress.

I assume you like the outreach to foreign nations part of neoconservativism.

You don't need to agree with someone's politics to respect them as a person. George H.W. was a man of honor. Being willing to engage with the world does not necessarily make one a neocon. It's how you do it that matters. Neocons during W's administration thought that Democracy could be imposed from without. H.W. was never that naive.

He help with the unification of Germany. He opened up Eastern Europe. He opened up the global free trade.

How did those items George H.W.'s administration accomplished help you?

~ The first time I heard the phrase "New World Order" was by Bush. Then I heard it from John McCain and again from Bush Jr. I recall no explanation or understanding what the phrase was referring to.

Most of the those countries are in NATO now, and we did it without firing a single shot in anger. The European Union is a bigger union, and that makes the the American - European Union much better. One time we were talking about nuclear war over Berlin. Now, its a different world.

Do you want to fight a nuclear war over Berlin? Or, accept a united Germany and a larger NATO. Or, accept a Soviet Union

CNN breaking news has nothing on this.

Fox is on it.

"I don't know that Atheists should be considered as citizens, nor should they be considered patriots. This is one nation under God." - George HW Bush.

One time he ran against the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Everyone makes errors :)

HW believed in this?

You got a scoop!

HW was a cold war Establishment Proponent of the American dominance of the world.

Of course this is what he thought.

The first time I heard "New World Order" was in relation to the Third Reich.

I was a little surprised when the phrasing was used by folks after the collapse of the Soviet union. It was accurate, though.

I knew some extreme partisan or partisans would politicize George H.W. Bush's death.

George H.W. Bush was never a talented politician, reputedly lacking "that vision thing". But he was a good manager and fair leader, one driven not by neo-conservatism but by a cautious temperament bounded by simple, but deeply felt, beliefs. Like most business conservatives he believed in free trade, and in foreign affairs his views he embraced the lessons of WWII and post-war Europe, usually leavened with realpolitik.

Fortunately for the US and the west, this man of the greatest generation occupied the white house when Kuwait fell to a grasping regional imperialist. President Bush understood it in the simple lessons of WWII - be it Czechoslovakia or Kuwait, there is no appeasement or half-measures with the ruthless empire builders. In the words of George Bush "This will not stand".

Of course, there was a newer generation of politicians in Washington whose post-Vietnam instincts were far closer Chamberlin than FDR or Churchill. Feckless and fearful men, like John Kerry, preached the politics of defeat - of useless quarter measures and of economic sanctions; of toothless UN resolutions. Bush would have none of it. In the best moment of his career of public service, he set about convincing a jelly kneed Senate, skeptical country, and three dozen nations that Kuwait mattered, as did the security of the oil producing nations of the Persian gulf.

Six months later President Bush was the leader of the most one-sided and massively successful military operation since WWII. And he shamed his critics, demonstrating the wisdom of wars of liberation don't require a quagmire of endless occupation (a lesson his son did not learn), but showing they do require a spine.

Thank you G.B..

I was a Republican at the time so I supported him over Clinton. I remember feeling really sad when Clinton came to the White House and the Bush's greeted him. It felt like such a defeat.

Politically, I'm completely different now.

My biggest criticism of H. W. Bush is his conservative international meddling foreign policy. We didn't have to save the Saudi's from Saddam Hussein. We should have handled it all diplomatically. By getting involved it led to 9/11, Afghanistan, then Iraq part II and then ISIS.

The good thing about H.W. Bush was that he was a compassionate conservative.

I have spoken of a thousand points of light, of all the community organizations that are spread like stars throughout the Nation, doing good. We will work hand in hand, encouraging, sometimes leading, sometimes being led, rewarding. We will work on this in the White House, in the Cabinet agencies. I will go to the people and the programs that are the brighter points of light, and I will ask every member of my government to become involved. The old ideas are new again because they are not old, they are timeless: duty, sacrifice, commitment, and a patriotism that finds its expression in taking part and pitching in

*gasp* Community organizations? Today's Republican laugh at the idea of Community Organizers.

Today, I totally disagree with most of his politics but he was at least a decent man and a president you could respect.

Never mind. You believe in globalism.

New world order mean globalism. It is anti-Brexit and anti-Trump and anti-country. It is the world, combined, and the best that could benefit the world.
