Trump retweeted a post by Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence, who has been outspoken about his desire to play what would probably be his final collegiate season. In another tweet Monday, Trump said: "Play College Football!"

"The president would very much like to see college football safely resume their sport... they work their whole lives for this moment and he'd like to see [these athletes] live out their dreams," White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany said Monday.

I think there is definitely a case for college football to open. Jim Harbaugh the coach of Michigan laid out a 9 point argument on why they should play:

• The Michigan football program has had 11 positive tests out of 893 administered, including three upon initial return to campus.

• We have had two positive tests out of the last 417 administered.

• We have had zero positive tests out of the last 353 administered.

• There have been zero positives tests among the coaches or staff over the entire eight weeks of testing.

• There has been no contract tracing to our fields, weight room, locker room or facility.

• We have had zero pauses in our training.

• We have complied with all CDC guidelines and self‐implemented stricter standards for contacting tracing in quarantining to prevent spread.

• We have followed all health and safety guidelines and welcome and encourage any health department, University administrators or other sports programs to visit and see how we practice and execute these protocols.

• As Darryl Conway our Chief Medical Officer and a member of the Big Ten’s Medical Advisory Group has stated, “I wish that others could see this model.”

"This isn’t easy," Harbaugh wrote. "This is hard. It is proven that the conduct, discipline and structure within our program have led to these stellar results. We respect the challenge that the virus has presented however we will not cower from it. We have developed a great prototype for how we can make this work and provide the opportunity for players to play. If you are transparent and follow the rules, this is how it can be done.

"I am forever proud of our players, parents, coaches and staff for being leaders and role models in our sport, at our institution and in society. We will continue to follow all health and safety guidelines, teach, train, and coach those young men and their families that have put their trust in us, while advocating for a football season in the fall.

"In quoting President Theodore Roosevelt, we do this “so that our place will not be among the cold and timid souls who know neither victory nor defeat."

At the end of the letter, Harbaugh included the "WeWantToPlay" and "WeWantToCoach" hashtag that has circulated since early Monday morning from both college football players and coaches.

Justin Fields, Trevor Lawrence, and many more college student-athletes want to play. They should be given the opportunity IMO.

Why they should play this fall, and if they can play in a COVID environment are two different things.

MAC and the Big10 have cancelled 2020 fall sports. SEC, ACC, Pac-12 and Big-12 will probably follow suit.

Remember, we played a Super Bowl during the pandemic, in a big city, Miami.

Covid-19 was declared a pandemic more than a month after the Super Bowl was played and long before the first case in Florida.

Would seem to me that College sports should be pretty low on the priority list.

Bad orange man for suggesting this. He will kill more people with his decisions.
I can see it now with a line up of CNN experts with their criticism. What is more important, football or stopping the virus.

No one cares what trump wants any more, usually when he supports something it is wrong. There isn't going to be any college football this year, wrap your head around that.

Trump simply wants the appearance of normalcy, regardless of the risks.

sociopaths don't give a rat's ass about individual people, hence 163K dead and steadily rising as he stage manages his presidency.

Trump is simply trying to keep votes. SEC = Redneck countries. If they cancel football, he will be blamed. He is doing everything in his power to not lose favor with his base.

And the schools don't want to play if they are not making money off it, despite their claims it impoverishes them. They can have games and just allow nobody in the stands, but good luck making money.

Up until now they have done a good job of keeping things under control. Now imagine what could happen when players are living on campus, mingling with other students, going to classes etc. Then the games begin. Unfortunately, not all programs you will be playing will be as successful containing the virus. Given how many thousands of players there are in college football the numbers will be higher and look worse from a perception stand point. Based on statistics, several players will suffer serious consequences. Are they even set up to do proper testing?

I've also heard an argument that not being in a structured environment may be worse for the health of the players. It seems to me the only way to make it work would be if the players never stepped foot on the campus. Do everything remotely.

No college football will be a disaster for the economy that's for sure. There will be a ton of people getting furloughed or laid off. College towns are gonna get wiped out.

Especially the smaller schools without the big TV contracts.
